Tottenham shelling out £35m on this sought-after midfield general would be worth every penny – Poch must do this

Why Tottenham Hotspur should sign Cagliari’s Nicolo Barella

According to the Sun, Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Cagliari midfielder Nicolo Barella. The 21-year-old is a highly rated box-to-box midfielder and has attracted interest from many other clubs as well.

The report claims that the likes of Liverpool and Juventus were also linked with a move for the Italian youngster. But Spurs should definitely beat their competitors to sign the talented midfielder. According to the report, Tottenham Hotspur are willing to shell out £35million to land the Cagliari midfielder.

The Lilywhites currently have a number of stars out injured. Midfielder Mousa Dembele has also been out injured for a while and has also been linked with an exit from the club. The other midfielders like Eric Dier and Harry Winks too have failed to make significant impacts, although the latter has looked a lot better in recent weeks.

Spurs should definitely make the move for Barella given the cub are enduring a midfield crisis at the moment. The Italian is one of the most sought-after box-to-box midfielders in the world and there’s a good reason behind it.

He’s strong and composed on the ball, possesses good control and superb pace as well. He has averaged a pass success rate of 83% in the Serie A this season and one of his best qualities is that he can turn defensive situations into offensive ones in minimal time. (Stats courtesy – Whoscored)

The likes of Dembele and Dier often take too long on the ball and fail to provide much in the transitional stage. Barella is someone who thrives in these situations and loves to pick out his teammates in space.

The likes of Lucas Moura, Son Heung-Min and Dele Alli are all strong runners behind the defence and will thrive off the supply from the Italian midfielder. He is also a very diligent defender and will be a perfect partner for Christian Eriksen in the middle of the park. While the Dane dictates the play and creates chances, Barella can offer him defensive security and stability in the midfield.
