Tottenham opinion: Why Layvin Kurzawa would be a good fit for Spurs

Back in August 2018, Le Parisien (h/t Bleacher Report) claimed Tottenham were interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain left-back Layvin Kurzawa. However, a deal didn’t materialise and the French defender stayed with PSG.

Layvin Kurzawa, 26, has struggled for game time at the Parc des Princes since Thomas Tuchel took over as manager. He is not the first choice at PSG and that combined with his contract situation could see him be available on the cheap this summer unless he’s allowed to simply walk away on a free transfer next year.

A move to the Premier League could be just what’s needed to reignite his career, and Tottenham should reignite their interest in Kurzawa and sign him from the Ligue 1 champions ahead of the new campaign.

Ben Davies and Danny Rose weren’t at their best this past season for Spurs. The Daily Mirror reports Rose is among eight players transfer listed by the club.

The defender is one of the longest-serving players at Tottenham, having spent eleven seasons in North London since joining from Leeds United in 2007.

Rose may be 29 but he is a crucial part of the Tottenham dressing room. However, he has expressed his interest in moving on and seeking a new challenge and it could be that both he and Mauricio Pochettino’s club feel the time has come for a change.

Kurzawa would be an ideal fit at Tottenham. The Frenchman was once regarded as one of the finest left-backs in the continent but it hasn’t gone according to the scripts at PSG.

At this stage of his career, the 26-year-old cannot afford to take up the role of a squad player. He needs to play regularly and would be a like-to-like replacement for Rose at Spurs.

The 26-year-old’s versatility allows him to play as a centre-back or an advanced role on the left flank. Kurzawa is an attacking left-back known for his pace, power, energy, crossing ability and work rate. His versatility coupled with his rich European experience would make him a smart addition to the Spurs backline.

Verdict

The former AS Monaco flyer is still only 26 and his versatility and technique would be an asset to any squad. If Tottenham can sign Kurzawa ahead of the new campaign, Pochettino could be the right manager to revive the fortunes of a flailing talent.
