Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs should go all out to sign Djibril Sidibe?

According to a report from The Sun, Atletico Madrid are stepping up their attempts to sign Tottenham right-back Kieran Trippier. Juventus are also interested in the England international, who is valued at £25million by Spurs.

Trippier, 28, has gradually established himself as a key member for Spurs since his move from Burnley in 2015, as he stepped up following Kyle Walker’s exit to become a regular starter.

While his energy, intensity and crossing ability would make him a quality signing for most clubs to shore up their right-back position, question marks always remain over his defending and positional awareness.

It remains to be seen whether or not Mauricio Pochettino lets go of the England international this summer, but it could prove to be a shrewd move from the Tottenham tactician to cash in and bring in a possible £25m.

Meanwhile, Serge Aurier has suffered a freak injury while on international duty with Ivory Coast at the African Nations Cup. He is entering his third season at Tottenham after his move from Paris Saint-Germain in 2017 and is yet to prove his consistency. All in all, he has been a liability at Spurs and Pochettino shouldn’t think twice in offloading him as well.

If Trippier and Aurier are sold in the same transfer window, Pochettino will be left with the likes Kyle Walker-Peters and Juan Foyth at right-back. Walker-Peters is an exciting prospect and will hope for regular game time from next season onwards, while Foyth did a decent job filling in at different times the last term.

Tottenham were interested in signing AS Monaco right-back Djibril Sidibe in 2017 but a move didn’t materialise. However, this summer transfer window could be the right time for Pochettino and co. to reignite their interest in Frenchman.

Sidibe, 26, endured an injury-plagued 2018/19 campaign as he managed just 26 Ligue 1 games. He will be turning 27 later this month and Spurs could enjoy his prime years if they manage to land him this summer.

Strong and powerful, the French international is a robust defender, tenacious in the tackle and can play on both sides of the defence.

He possesses solid pace, energy and technical abilities which will help him adapt to the rigours of the Premier League quite easily. Sidibe also has massive European experience and he is exactly the kind of player Tottenham should be signing to win silverware.

Verdict

All in all, Sidibe will be an ideal fit for Pochettino’s brand of football and an instant upgrade on the likes of Trippier and Aurier.
