Tottenham reviving £30m pursuit of this talented 22-year-old midfielder would help fill Eriksen’s void – Agreed?

Why Tottenham should plot a January swoop for Carlos Soler

According to a report from The Daily Mail, Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen is ready to snub a £200,000-a-week deal to land his dream move to the La Liga.

The Dane, 27, is out of contract at the end of the season and could still leave for Spain before their deadline shuts on Monday.

The midfielder has made his desire to play for Real Madrid no secret but it hasn’t prevented Tottenham launching one final last-ditch attempt to secure his future. But Eriksen is ready to stand firm and let his contract run down and leave on the cheap with Barcelona also a possibility, the report adds.

Eriksen has been in and out of the team amid links with a move to Spain. Having changed the game when he came off the bench in Spurs’ opening weekend win over Aston Villa, he started their 2-2 draw with champions Manchester City the following week but was then dropped again for Sunday’s shock defeat to Newcastle United.

And after the defeat to Newcastle, Mauricio Pochettino admitted his squad is the ‘most unsettled’ it has ever been during his five years in charge in north London. It’s understandable as to why Pochettino dropped Eriksen again from the starting XI at the weekend.

Even if Eriksen exits Spurs, Pochettino will have to wait until January to make his next move in the transfer market. The lack of depth in the attacking department remains one of the club’s main issues, especially with Dele Alli out injured. Therefore, it would perhaps be wiser for Spurs to sign a new attacker in January.

Back in January, the ESPN had claimed that Spurs were plotting a £30million summer swoop for Valencia’s Carlos Soler. After failing to sign him before the new season’s start, Spurs should rekindle their interest in the Spanish midfielder and sign him during the winter transfer window.

A product of the Valencia youth system, Carlos Soler, 22, is a right-sided midfielder by trade but he can operate as a central defensive midfielder, as a no.10 or on either of the wing. He is moderately paced, smart, and creative and is known for his ability to pick out a pass in the final third.

A solid passer of the ball, the Spaniard also has a lot of tenacity and energy which allows him to cover ground quickly and help transition in counter-attacks.

Verdict

What makes Soler an appealing prospect for Tottenham is his versatility and experience.

Replacing Eriksen won’t be easy but Pochettino should plot a January move for Soler to fill the Dane’s potential void in the squad. It’ll strengthen Spurs massively and give them a much-needed boost for the second half of this season.
