Tottenham Opinion: Why Spurs should make a move for Oguzhan Ozyakup?

Back in April 2018, a report from Turkish news outlet Aksam claimed Tottenham were one of the Premier League clubs interested in signing Besiktas star Oguzhan Ozyakup.

Oguzhan Ozyakup, 26, blew hot and cold last season as he managed just eight assists in all competitions. The Turkish midfielder’s involvement in the game has been more in the 2018/19 campaign, scoring three goals and assisting six times further in 27 games thus far.

Considering his performance levels in the Turkish Super Lig this campaign, should Tottenham rekindle their interest in the midfielder?

Without any doubts, Tottenham should reignite their interest in Ozyakup and sign him this summer. The north Londoners are certain to spend big in the summer transfer window after firing blanks in the past two windows.

And failure to sign a single player has come back to haunt Tottenham, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side first slipping out of the title race and now scrambling to finish in the top four.

It’s important for Pochettino to invest in key areas of the pitch to build a team that is truly capable of challenging for the title next season.

One area the Spurs manager should prioritise over others is the midfield, with Mousa Dembele already gone in January and Victor Wanyama is having injury issues of his own to deal with.

Eric Dier hasn’t been at his best this season but Spurs fans should be glad Moussa Sissoko has stepped up and helped the team with series dominant displays in midfield alongside Harry Winks.

In the absence of Christian Eriksen, Spurs often lack someone who can make incisive passes in the final third and unlock defences from the midfield. Eriksen is the team’s creative hub and with him in the team, Pochettino’s side looks more fluid going forward and dynamic in transition.

That’s why signing a player like Ozyakup would make a lot of sense for Tottenham. Not only will he fill the void left by Dembele but also play the role of Eriksen when the Dane is absent.

The Turkey international can play in various roles in midfield, owing to his composure in possession, ball-retention skills and energy.

Formerly of Arsenal, the 26-year-old can pick a pass and use his creativity to split open defences. He does so with a lot of ease and poise and when he’s on song, Ozyakup can be a real threat in the final third.

Verdict

Tottenham have to spend big and improving their midfield options ahead of the new campaign has to be first and foremost. Ozyakup would be a solid choice for Spurs and if Pochettino manages to land the Turkish midfielder, he’ll be also rubbing salt into the wounds of Arsenal.
