Tottenham reigniting interest in this 25-year-old international playmaker would be a statement of intent

Tottenham Opinion: Why Hakan Calhanoglu will be a good fit for Spurs?

According to a report from TransferMarketWeb, AC Milan could make playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu available in the summer transfer window.

The Turkey international, 25, has failed to live up to the expectations at AC Milan since arriving from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer of 2017. He has blown hot and cold this season, managing just a goal and six assists in 26 Serie A appearances.

Hakan Calhanoglu may be contracted at San Siro until June 2021 but Milan are planning to sell him this summer in order to recoup some money they spent on him a couple of years back. That being said, Tottenham should revive their interest and sign the 25-year-old this summer.

It looks as if Tottenham will go another season trophyless. The north Londoners slipped out of the title race earlier this month and were knocked out of the FA Cup by Crystal Palace in the last 16. As far as the Champions League is concerned, they face a stellar test in the quarter-finals against Manchester City.

Following no signings in the past two transfer windows, Mauricio Pochettino should spend really big in the next transfer window to assemble a squad capable of challenging for silverwares.

A brilliant signing would be Calhanoglu, who was tracked by Tottenham back in 2016 but a deal never materialised despite the player’s agent confirming interest. Instead, a year later he went onto join Milan from Leverkusen.

Calhanoglu could come as a direct replacement for Christian Eriksen, who as per the Calciomercato has been linked with a move away from north London to the likes of Real Madrid and Juventus.

The Dane is contracted to Spurs until the summer of 2020, which means that this summer is the last in which Pochettino and co. could potentially command a fee for the player, as next winter he would be free to sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club.

If Tottenham fail to agree on a new deal with Eriksen any time soon, it would be wise on Pochettino’s part to sell him this summer and replace him with someone like Calhanoglu.

The Turkish star primarily operates through the middle but can also be used on either wing. With excellent technical ability, an eye for goal and the vision to carve open defences, the 25-year-old has all the attributes to be a success in the Premier League and the final piece of the puzzle for Pochettino.

Furthermore, he is a set-piece expert and also possesses the ability to score bangers from long-range.

Verdict

Calhanoglu may have not set Serie A alight but he has time and age on his side to get his career back on track. A move to Tottenham at this point would be ideal for the former Leverkusen ace as Pochettino will look to challenge for silverware next season.
