Tottenham must make a January move to sign this 21-year-old wing wizard with £70m release clause – Agreed?

Why Tottenham should make a move for Federico Chiesa in January

Back in March, the Guardian had claimed that Tottenham were planning a summer swoop for Fiorentina star, Federico Chiesa. In the end, Tottenham didn’t trigger the winger’s £70m release clause.

Federico Chiesa, 21, has quickly made a name for himself as one of Italy’s most exciting forwards.

He was one of the bright sparks in an otherwise lacklustre last campaign for Fiorentina, scoring six goals and supplied seven assists in 37 Serie A games. The Italian’s performances didn’t go unnoticed as he was on the radar of some big European clubs over the summer.

After a lengthy period of inactivity in the transfer market, Tottenham spent big during the summer transfer window.

Tanguy Ndombele was snapped up from Lyon, Ryan Sessegnon from Fulham and Giovani Lo Celso was secured on loan from Real Betis. Jack Clarke has also been signed but sent back to Leeds United on a season-long loan.

However, Spurs’ start to the new Premier League season has been ordinary. They have picked up four points from the opening three games, with Mauricio Pochettino’s side suffering a shock 1-0 loss at home to Newcastle United last weekend.

The north London club looked out of sorts against the Magpies, and despite having 80% of the possession, they just couldn’t breach the visitors’ defence.

Much has been spoken about Christian Eriksen’s future at the club in the last couple of weeks. The Dane is out of contract at the end of the season, so Spurs must sell him now as they already have signed Lo Celso as his potential replacement. But question marks remain over Tottenham’s lack of quality from wide areas.

Despite the presence of Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela, Pochettino’s side lack natural width but someone like Federico Chiesa would provide a lot of quality out wide.

Chiesa is an exciting attacker that can play in different positions across the final third. An excellent dribbler, the young Italian is blessed with excellent pace, power and energy which helps him run tirelessly throughout a game.

The 21-year-old is a really good crosser of the ball as well, which could help Spurs get more quality balls in the box for Harry Kane.

The Italian international has loads of talent; he is quick, creative, can score goals, excellent on the ball and has a great vision to shine in a team like Tottenham.

Verdict

Pochettino has worked well with young players throughout his managerial career and signing Chiesa in the winter transfer window would be a smart move, especially with the 21-year-old’s star continuing to rise.
