Tottenham missing out on this 17-year-old rising starlet would be a blunder by Mourinho

Why Tottenham should make a move for Mathys Saban in January

According to Foot Mercato (h/t The Daily Star), Tottenham Hotspur are interested in the signature of Saint-Etienne teenager Mathys Saban.

Mathys Saban, 17, is a key part of the Saint-Etienne’s U19 side and his performances haven’t gone unnoticed. He has six goals in his 12 appearances for the U19s. The report (h/t The Daily Star) adds that RB Leipzig are also interested in the teenager.

Tottenham, meanwhile, appointed Jose Mourinho last month as Mauricio Pochettino’s replacement and the Portuguese has already stamped his authority on the squad. Mourinho has made a good start, winning all three of his games since taking charge.

Tottenham were 11 points adrift of the Champions League positions when he arrived but Saturday’s 3-2 win over Bournemouth means the gap on fourth-placed Chelsea is now just five points.

Things have started changing for good under the Portuguese tactician but Tottenham must spend in January to address a couple of key issues to boost their top-four hopes.

Despite Spurs winning their last three games across all competitions, they have conceded six goals. In the Premier League, they have leaked 21 goals in 14 games and thus, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that Mourinho should prioritise reinforcing his backline in January.

Spurs are expected to back the newly-appointed manager in January to reshape his squad (h/t Daily Star). Quality and experienced players are definitely needed at the club, but Mourinho should also focus on enhancing Tottenham’s academy. That’s why the North London club must go for Mathys Saban in January.

Notwithstanding the fact that Saban is yet to make a single senior appearance for Saint-Etienne, Spurs would be wise to sign him as a long-term prospect. Doing so would be a shrewd investment considering the fact that Tottenham have some emerging talents like Troy Parrott, Juan Foyth, Japhet Tanganga, Oliver Skipp and Kyle Walker-Peters in their ranks.

Also, Spurs could provide the 17-year-old with a more competitive platform to showcase his talent and continue his development. A move to Spurs will allow him to develop under one of football’s best ever managers.

Verdict

Hence, Tottenham must try and sign Saban during the January transfer window since they cannot afford to lose out on a promising starlet like him.
