Why Tottenham Should Not Sign Adam Smith In The Summer

Bournemouth defender Adam Smith seems to be in high demand all of a sudden. The 26-year old has been a consistent performer for the Cherries this season and has emerged as a vital player for Eddie Howe’s side.

But, it was reported earlier this week by The Sun that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing the player with first-choice right-back Kyle Walker linked with a move away to Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

And now, The Sun has gone on to claim that Spurs have been joined by fellow London club Chelsea in the race for Smith. The report says that the champions-elect sent scouts to watch Smith in the Cherries’ 2-2 draw against Stoke City last weekend and will be monitoring the player again this weekend when they take on Burnley.

With the champions also entering the fray to sign the Englishman, should Tottenham act swiftly and make a move for Smith in the summer Probably not.

Kyle Walker has been an incredible servant for Tottenham over the years. The 26-year old England international has been one of their best players in the past few years and has been one of the most prominent members in the recent rise of the club under Mauricio Pochettino. Widely regarded as the best right-back in the Premier League and one of the best in his position across Europe, Walker has been rumoured to be heading for the exit doors.

The reason behind the unrest is apparently Pochettino’s recent distrust of the player to deliver in the big games. The Argentine boss used back-up right-back Kieran Trippier for the FA Cup semi-finals against Chelsea and the North London derby against Arsenal, which seems to have gone not too well with Walker.

So, it is normal for Tottenham to prepare for contingencies. If it so happens that Walker does leave the club and this is where Adam Smith enters the picture.

Smith is a graduate from the Spurs academy and having come through the ranks, he struggled to break into the first-team. After seven loan spells away from the White Hart Lane and a single senior appearance, the 26-year old departed from the club to join the Cherries in January 2014. The right-back played a vital role in Bournemouth getting promoted to the Premier League for the 2015-16 season and has been a key member for Eddie Howe’s side in helping them stay up in the English top division comfortably over the past two seasons.

In the ongoing campaign, the £2.13m rated right-back has managed to notch up 35 appearances in all competitions for the Cherries contributing a goal and 5 assists. Versatile enough to play anywhere on the right flank, he has done quite well for the Cherries wherever he has been needed. A good dribbler of the ball and an astute defender, he will be a good addition to any of the mid-table teams.

But with Tottenham now regularly challenging for the Premier League title and hoping to improve their showing in Europe, they will need a player who can bring in much more quality to the side. While Smith does seem to be a decent player, he might not be good enough for Spurs – much like the recent case of Tom Carroll who is performing very well at Swansea City, but couldn’t make the cut with the North Londoners. So, while a homecoming would appeal to the player, Tottenham will be much better served if they bring in someone with more quality and European experience.
