Tottenham Hotspur should go all out to sign this 25-year-old midfield star with £16m release clause

Tottenham Hotspur should certainly make the move for Wilmar Barrios

According to the Dailystar, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to revive their interest in Boca Juniors midfielder Wilmar Barrios. Spurs were close to securing a deal in the summer but the move ultimately failed to materialize.

The report suggests that Real Madrid are also interested in acquiring his services with Los Blancos set to offer £20 million as part of the deal. The Colombian’s current contract consists of a £16 million release clause and Boca Juniors could be tempted by Madrid’s offer.

But Spurs must definitely do everything in their power to beat the Spanish outfit to his signing. Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino failed to make a single signing in the summer and must now aim to invest in the squad as the Lilywhites finalize their move to the new stadium.

The manager hasn’t bought anyone since the arrival of Lucas Moura from Paris Saint-Germain last January. Spurs midfielder Mousa Dembele’s contract will expire at the end of the season, meaning the Londoners will require added reinforcements in that department.

Given that Spurs would be short of a holding midfielder in their squad – and considering the fact that Eric Dier has been poor this season – signing Barrios should be their top priority. The 25-year-old midfielder impressed for Colombia in this summer’s World Cup in Russia and the fact that Real Madrid are in the hunt for his signature is a testament to his talent.

He is extremely calm and composed in possession. Barrios is intelligent and aware while in possession. The Colombian possesses superb work ethic and exceptional defensive prowess. It won’t be easy to replicate Dembele’s defensive nous but Barrios will certainly relish the challenge.

The 25-year-old has averaged 4.2 tackles and 3.8 fouls per game for the Boca Juniors this season. He is also dominant in the air, averaging a total of 3.2 aerial duels as well. What makes quite enticing is his pace with and without the ball. (Stats courtesy – Whoscored)

Over the course of the last year, the Belgian midfielder has often slowed down the play when in transition and initiating the counter but that will not be a worry with Barrios. He is a smooth and crisp passer of the ball and can ping them long as well.

Spurs are in dire need of a quality midfielder in the middle of the park and that is why Pochettino should do everything in his power to beat the other clubs to Barrios’ signature. The Argentine is yet to win a trophy since arriving at the London club but he will be able to do that by keeping up with the competition.
