Tottenham breaking the bank to sign this rising young English star would be an amazing move by Pochettino

Why Tottenham must break the bank in January to sign Callum Wilson

According to the Sky Sports, Tottenham Hotspur are admirers of Bournemouth star Callum Wilson. The 26-year-old has been in brilliant form for Bournemouth this term, hitting six goals and four assists in the Premier League while scoring on his England debut against the United States last week.

After recovering from two serious knee injuries that almost ended his career, the 26-year-old has shown mental strength and the character under the tutelage of Eddie Howe. With Callum Wilson scoring and assisting a truckload of goals in Bournemouth colours, interest from Tottenham Hotspur comes as no surprise.

Tottenham failed to sign new players in the summer, becoming the first club in the Premier League history to not make a summer signing.

Although a lack of investment has not affected Tottenham, as they are placed 4th on the table just one point behind Chelsea and five behind leaders Manchester City, they need to bring in reinforcements in January to realistically mount a title challenge this season.

Mauricio Pochettino has a really exciting squad that has done extremely well in the last few seasons but trophies have eluded him so far in north London. And to challenge on all fronts, Pochettino and the Spurs board need to show more ambition in the transfer market to match the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea.

A top-class striker to ease the goalscoring burden on Harry Kane’s shoulders should be prioritised by Pochettino given that Fernando Llorente has turned out to be a flop and is out of contract at the end of the season. In this case, Spurs would do a brilliant job by poaching Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson.

Wilson is the Premier League’s joint-third highest goalscorer so far this season with 6 goals, and has also contributed four assists as Bournemouth have enjoyed a bright start to the 2018/19 campaign.

The 26-year-old’s outstanding form this season rewarded him with a call-up to the England squad and on his debut for the Three Lions against the USA, he looked right at home and capped off the evening with a sweet left-footed goal.

Capable of playing in a two-striker formation and also as a long striker, Wilson is an intelligent striker who can terrorise defenders with his blistering pace, movement and quick link-up play.

He is a fantastic finisher and can get in behind the defences with his pace and smart movement. The former Coventry City ace is strong and can hold the ball up very well, allowing his teammates to get involved in the game.

Should a move to Tottenham materialise, it would be extremely difficult to oust Harry Kane as the team’s main marksman. But as Wilson is capable of playing as a secondary striker or in a withdrawn role, he could form a deadly partnership with Kane in the attack.

Eddie Howe would be reluctant to lose Wilson midway through the campaign but Tottenham should make a tantalising offer which Bournemouth just can’t refuse. Wilson’s profile ticks a number of boxes for the Lilywhites and hence, the north Londoners must break their bank for the England new boy.
