Tottenham beat Manchester United to Sergio Reguilon transfer

According to the Evening Standard’s Dan Kilpatrick, Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of completing the signing of Spanish left-back Sergio Reguilon from Real Madrid.

The Spanish international has already arrived at the club’s training facility for his medical, with an announcement likely to be made on Thursday.

Reguilon came through the youth ranks at Real Madrid and made his senior debut for the club in 2018. However, following the return of Zinedine Zidane as manager, his first-team opportunities reduced drastically.

Last summer, Reguilon was loaned out to Sevilla, where he thrived. The 23-year-old played a key role as his temporary club finished in the top four in La Liga, while also won the UEFA Europa League. He was named the best left-back in La Liga for 2019/20 due to his exploits.

However, with the pathway to the starting XI at Real Madrid not clear, his future had been a subject of speculation. Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United were the two clubs that had shown keen interest in the Spaniard. (h/t Express)

Both teams had met Real Madrid’s valuation of £27m for the Spanish international. However, Manchester United were reluctant to agree to the La Liga champions’ insistence on inserting a future buy-back clause. Tottenham, though, were happy to accept the terms. (h/t Express)

Reguilon is expected to sign a five-year contract with Tottenham, which will include a buyback clause of around £41m. (h/t Express)

The 23-year-old will become Tottenham’s fourth summer signing, following the arrivals of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Joe Hart and Matt Doherty.
