Top-5 Young Players To Watch Out For This Season In The EFL Championship

In the recent years, the EFL Championship has become a great platform for young players to showcase their talents and continue their development. It might not get the coverage or the limelight that the Premier League gets, but it has become a hotbed for young talents to flourish, given the playing time on offer and the level of football improving with every passing year.

And here we take a look at 5 of the most promising young players to watch out for in the English second-tier, in the 2017/18 campaign.

Ryan Sessegnon (Fulham)

The 17-year old left-back has already made a huge mark in the footballing world with some stellar displays last season itself, which led to strong interest from several Premier League clubs.

But Sessegnon opted to stay with the Cottagers and continue his development. The England U-19 international has played 11 times for Slavisa Jokanovic’s side this season, in which he has managed a single goal and an assist to add to his 7 goals and 5 assists from the preceding campaign. An attack-minded full-back with pace, power and technical ability, he is sure to scale greater heights and he is definitely a player to keep an eye out for in the coming years.

Jarrod Bowen (Hull City)

The exciting young attacker from the Hull City academy has stepped up brilliantly for the Tigers on their return to the EFL Championship this season and is surely someone to watch out for.

The 20-year old winger has been brilliant for Leonid Slutsky’s side, having already netted 5 times this season in 9 games in the Championship, making him the joint second-highest scorer. His performances in the first month of the season were so impressive that Bowen was rewarded with the EFL Player of the Month for August.

The best thing about the player though is that he offers so much to the team other than just his goals, which makes him a fan favourite at the KCOM Arena.

Ruben Neves (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

The 20-year old Portuguese sensation made quite some waves, when he completed a £15.8million move from Porto to Wolverhampton Wanderers this summer. And fair play to him, as he has totally justified the huge price-tag with some highly promising displays for Wolves, that sees them right up there in the table, level on points with leaders Leeds United.

The defensive midfielder has featured in all 9 championship games for Nuno Espirito Santo’s side, in which he has managed to find the back of the net on one occasion. An excellent screen for the defence, Neves has all the attributes needed in a player to find success in a holding midfield role, while also having the technique and a solid range of distribution as well. No doubt, he will have a great future and a huge role to play in how the season fares for Wolves.

Diogo Jota (Wolverhampton Wanderers)

Another Wolves player on the list, Jota arrived at the Molineux Stadium on loan from Atletico Madrid, after a stellar season on loan with Porto in the previous campaign.

The Portuguese attacker has led the charge for Wolves this season, contributing 5 goals and an assist in 9 Championship outings, leading them to second place in the table. A highly creative player who can score as well as create in plenty, the 20-year old has already endeared himself to the Wolves faithful with his starry displays. He will most definitely return to Atletico at the end of the season but for now, the English football fans can feast on his exciting displays.

Kalvin Phillips (Leeds United)

The 21-year old Leeds midfielder was often under the scanner last season under Garry Monk, with inconsistent displays one after the other. However, this time around, he seems to have taken his game a notch higher and has developed into a vital cog for the Whites.

Under new boss Thomas Christiansen, Phillips has started every single game in the Championship this season and has played a vital role in their ascent to the top of the league. Never the one to shy away from his defensive duties, the Englishman seems to have added goals to his game as well, as he has already scored 4 times from 9 games this term. To put that into perspective, Phillips just managed one strike in 40 games last term. He may not be the flashiest of the players, but the 21-year old is definitely a player to watch out for.
