Top 5 Midfielders Of The Championship Season So Far

Midfielders are the glue that holds the attack and defence together and more often than not, they are the ones responsible for a lot of things that happen throughout the game. It is definitely not an easy task and yet we come across certain players who just make it look so effortless and magical. With that in mind, here are five such midfielders in the Championship, who have managed to awe one and all with their sublime skills in the middle of the park.

Diogo Jota – Wolverhampton Wanderers

An out-and-out attacker by nature, Jota is undoubtedly one of the best midfielders in the competition. He is nippy, agile and creative with a penchant for finding the back of the net even in the toughest of situations. Even a tiny bit of space is enough for Jota to capitalise on and his performances have truly uplifted the Wolves. He has contributed 13 goals and 4 assists so far this season and if he continues like this despite being just 21, Jota will go a long way.

Conor Hourihane – Aston Villa

Arguably one of the best box-to-box midfielders in the Championship, Hourihane has been in splendid form. He has chipped in with 7 goals and 2 assists so far and he seems to be showing no signs of slowing down. Effective at pulling the strings in the middle of the park and dictating the proceedings, Hourihane is the perfect blend of experience and talent. Until now, he has already won the Man of the Match award twice this season.

Korey Smith – Bristol City

It is tough to forget a man who was responsible for scoring a dramatic injury-time winner to help his club beat Premier League giants Manchester United. Easily one of their most influential players, Smith has been in spectacular form this season and has played a key role in bringing Bristol to where they are at present. He can read the game quite well and he knows when to surge forward and when to fall back, which often leads to quick decision-making on the field.

Ryan Woods – Brentford

Woods is perhaps one of the most technically gifted midfielders in the Championship. He has been one of Brentford’s key players ever since he joined them from Shrewsbury Town and is often renowned as the ‘Ginger Pirlo’. Many a time, fans complain that he lacks pace but the way he exerts control by using his intelligence makes him a lethal midfielder. Most players focus on outplaying their opponent but Woods chooses to out-think his opponents instead.

Tom Cairney – Fulham

Cairney has been subjected to a lot of attention from the Premier League and it is no surprise. He is efficient and is in his prime as well. At 27 years of age, he can be a valuable addition to any squad and Fulham must hold on to him at all costs.

He is extremely creative and is quite generous when it comes to supplying chances to the front line. Given the way he has been playing in the Championship, Cairney has displayed solid talent and he can truly go a long way if he continues like this.
