Top 3 January signings of the decade in the Premier League

With the January transfer window now open, all the Premier League clubs are surely working overtime behind the scenes to line up deals for their potential targets.

We are already at the halfway mark in the ongoing campaign and the January transfer window is set to bring with a golden opportunity for the clubs to bolster their squads, as they look to plug the holes and push on towards achieving their respective goals heading into the crucial second half of the season.

With teams often reluctant to fork out huge amounts of cash in January, the mid-season trading period is best known for the availability of players on cut-price deals.

However, there have been plenty of exceptions in the past decade where clubs have spent a fortune to rope in big names from across the continent, with some of them going on to enjoy a fruitful spell in the Premier League.

With that in mind, let us take a look at 3 of the most successful January signings in the Premier League as the decade draws to a close.

1. Luis Suarez

The Brazilian trio of Roberto Firmino, Alisson and Fabinho played a key role in Liverpool’s 2018-19 UEFA Champions League triumph but as a matter of fact, the Reds’ success with South American players in the current decade dates back to Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan international was making waves with his incredible goalscoring heroics at Ajax in the Eredivisie when Liverpool forked out £22.7million to bring him to Anfield in January 2011, and Kenny Dalglish’s decision proved to be a super hit.

Suarez often came under scrutiny for several disciplinary issues but he made sure that those blemishes were overshadowed by his prolific form in front of goal.

A three-and-a-half-year stint at Anfield was marked by a solitary League Cup triumph but the Uruguayan racked up a host of individual accolades, including the Premier League Player of the Season and the Golden Boot Award in the 2013-14 campaign.

Suarez plundered 69 goals in 110 appearances for the Reds and while his departure to Barcelona in 2014 wasn’t a happy one for the fans, he certainly did enough to leave his legacy behind at Merseyside.

2. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang

Having completed a £56million move to Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund back in January 2018, the Gabonese international has continued to fire on all cylinders in the Premier League.

Following a bright start to life in North London under Arsene Wenger, Aubameyang went on to share the 2018-19 Premier League Golden Boot with Mo Salah and Sadio Mane, scoring 22 times as Arsenal secured a respectable 5th-place finish.

The 30-year-old, who plundered 31 goals in all competitions last season, was also instrumental in Arsenal’s march to the final of the UEFA Europa League.

Despite Arsenal’s struggles in the ongoing campaign, Aubameyang has once again hit the ground running with 14 goals in all competitions so far this term, and an overall tally of 45 goals in 69 Premier League games makes him arguably the decade’s most effective January signing.

3. Gary Cahill

Chelsea have grabbed the headlines with some blockbuster signings in the Roman Abramovich era, and while Garry Cahill doesn’t really fall within the bracket of a big-money signing, the centre-back is right up there with the best when it comes to the list of most effective recruits at Stamford Bridge.

Signed from Bolton Wanderers for a fee of just £7million in January 2012, Cahill went on to enjoy a trophy-laden spell in West London, winning the UEFA Champions League, 2 UEFA Europa League crowns, 2 Premier League titles and 2 FA Cup medals before departing as a free agent to join Crystal Palace this past summer.

Cahill clocked up almost 300 appearances for the Blues in all competitions over the course of seven-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge while a lion’s share of his 61 England caps also came during his illustrious stint at Chelsea.
