Top 3 January Purchases Made By Tottenham Hotspur In The Premier League Era

The Premier League is easily one of the richest domestic leagues in Europe as clubs from around the country barely think twice about spending cash on potential stars in transfer windows. The January transfer window is almost upon us and clubs in the league will be busy, trying to lure their transfer targets out of their current clubs. Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur are also expected to be active in the market as Pochettino looks for some additions to his squad that has been pale at times this season. The club has not been overly successful in their purchases in January but over the years, they have bought some top players in the winter transfer window. Here are 3 of the best signings that the Spurs have made in January:

Jermain Defoe (2004 and2009):

Jermain Defoe

The current Sunderland hitman, Jermain Defoe, joined the Premier League as a teenager with West Ham and was signed by Spurs on more than one occasion. David Pleat bought Defoe to the club back in 2004 and was their highest goals scorer for the 2004-05 league season, helping the Spurs to a decent finish under Martin Jol. Though he was sold to Portsmouth, just a couple of years later, Harry Redknapp, who took over the Lane in 2009, bought Defoe back with immediate effect. He stayed for another 4 and a half seasons where he scored more than 10 goals on every occasion, turning into the best January signing for Spurs in their Premier Leauge history.

Michael Dawson  (2005):

One of the best center backs to play for the Spurs, Dawson, moved to the club back in 2005 and enjoyed close to 10 successful years at the club. He helped them out of the slump they were back in 05 and formed a superb partnership with Ledley King at the back. The duo helped transform the side into a team that can constantly challenge for the top-4. He captained the U21 England side and showed his leadership abilities in the UCL run for Spurs back in 2009-10. He also became the skipper of the side a couple of years after being named the player of the year, and to date, remains one of the best January transfer for the Spurs.

Jonathan Woodgate (2008):

With successful spells at Leeds United, Newcastle United, Real Madrid and Middlesbrough, Woodgate came to the Lane with some high reputation and in his one and a half year at the club, he showed why he was known as one of the best defenders in his time. A strong center half who loves to dominate the opposition, Woodgate, did not help Tottenham over a long period but in his time at the club, he has provided them with moments that they will not easily forget. The night at Wembley against Chelsea in extra time and the goals against Hull City and AC Milan a year later showed his importance to the side, making him one of the best January transfers for the club.
