According to a report from the BBC, Derby County players Tom Lawrence and Mason Bennett have pleaded guilty to drink-driving after a horror smash that has left teammate Richard Keogh unconscious.
Mason Bennett, 23, and 25-year-old Wales international Tom Lawrence were arrested following the crash on the A6 near Allestree, Derby, last month after the incident. It was Lawrence’s vehicle that had crashed into the back of Bennett’s Mercedes GLC before ending up wrapped around a lamppost.
Derby captain Richard Keogh, who was a passenger in one of the cars, suffered a knee injury that has ruled him out for up to 15 months. Lawrence and Bennett were fined six weeks’ wages by the club after the crash, the report adds.
After pleading guilty to drink-driving, Derby duo Lawrence and Bennett could face jail, claims the Daily Mirror. That being said, let us have a look at their season in numbers for the Rams so far.
Lawrence has 20 caps for Wales and was signed by Derby from Leicester in August 2017. Bennett, who came through Derby’s youth system, became the club’s youngest ever player when he appeared against Middlesbrough in 2011 at the age of 15 years and 99 days old.
As far as Lawrence is concerned, he has started nine Championship games for the Rams under Phillip Cocu. The 25-year-old has supplied three goals and an assist this season, with his brace coming on the opening day victory over Huddersfield Town. The Welshman has enjoyed full support from Cocu and he hasn’t disappointed the manager.
Bennett, unlike Lawrence, has made sporadic appearances under Cocu. The nippy forward has started just once in the five league games he has played so far, contributing no goals and assists. Overall, the 23-year-old has made seven appearances across all competitions.
