Chelsea opinion – Three ideal destinations for Gary Cahill

According to a report in Sky Sports, outgoing Chelsea centre-back Gary Cahill believes he can still do a job for a team in the Premier League next season.

The Englishman’s contract at Stamford Bridge expires this summer and he is a free agent. Hence, any club can come in with a good wage offer and sign him.

The defender made just two league appearances this season, as manager Maurizio Sarri didn’t fancy handing him regular game time.

However, the 33-year-old, who turned down offers from Monaco, Juventus and Fulham, still believes that he can play for any other Premier League side (h/t Sky Sports).

So, here are three English top-flight clubs who should make a move for him this summer:

Aston Villa

The Villans won the playoff final and are now back in the Premier League. Currently, their two first-choice centre-backs, Tyrone Mings and Axel Tuanzebe, were on loan from the Premier League. While the duo has done well, it is still inexperienced at the highest level.

Hence, it would make sense for Dean Smith’s men to make an offer for Gary Cahill. The 33-year-old would add quality, experience and much more to the team.

Villa’s assistant boss is John Terry, someone who knows the game of Cahill inside out. Thus, that would help a lot in the latter settling down at the club.

Burnley

Sean Dyche’s men do have capable first-choice centre-backs in James Tarkowski and Ben Mee, however, they do not have adequate backups. Kevin Long is a good player, but the Clarets do need more, provided any of the first-choice centre-backs suffer injury.

For that reason, it won’t be a bad idea to swoop in for Gary Cahill, chiefly because the 33-year-old is a free agent.

Hence, if Burnley manage to get the Chelsea man, then they can have a player for free, who can add experience to the squad and adequate backup to the centre-backs.

West Ham

The Hammers have Issa Diop and Fabian Balbuena as their first-choice centre-backs, with Angelo Ogbonna as an ideal backup. However, it was evident that they were quite open at the back, and they need to shore up their defence if European ambitions are to be taken into account.

Therefore, Manuel Pellegrini’s men should contemplate on making a move for Gary Cahill. The 33-year-old can add that much-needed experience to the back-line and he is a quality player as well. So, it may not be a bad move.
