Time To Axe – 3 Reasons Why Chelsea Should Get Rid Of This Midfielder During The January Transfer Window

After a disappointing defence of the Premier League title last season, Stamford Bridge outfit Chelsea are back in the race at the top of the table this season under new manager Antonio Conte. Having spent insane amounts of money on the squad, the Italian manager has not settled into a starting XI that is winning him games regularly and his side have now won each of their last 11 league games, making them one of the best teams in the competition this season. Though there have been a number of star performers for the side, Conte, is not really happy with the options at his disposal and is looking to change a few things. He will be looking to offload players who are not in his plans at the club and one such player who might be out of the club in January is midfielder John Obi Mikel. He is yet to start a game for the side this season and here are 3 reasons why he should be sold in January:

Chelsea’s loanees:

The Blues have one of the biggest squads in the competition with as many as 38 players playing out on loan this season after 33 last season. The manager will know that he has a number of top class players in his side to choose from at the end of the season and there is no real reason for Conte to stick with Mikel this season. The 29-year old has acted as a cover for injuries in the midfield if needed but with a number of top class midfielders already waiting in the ranks, it might be time for Conte to let Mikel go and free up a place for one of the loanees to get some game time in the senior side at the club..

Obi Mikel has no future at Stamford Bridge and will leave in January or next summer

Lack of fitness:

Though Conte did not really need the midfielder so far this season, Mikel is still not adjudged to be fit enough to start a game for the side this season. He has picked up a muscle injury almost a month ago and is still not back in training and it will be hard for Conte to stick with him in crunch times. At 29, Mikel has a few years left under his belt but having had no real game time for more than 6 months now, he is not a player that can help Chelsea in the immediate future and is best replaced in the squad before the start of the next season.

The ££££:

Though the Premier League is one of the richest leagues in the world at the moment, the new Chinese Premier League has caused all sorts of problems for the sides in England, who have lost a few players to lucrative contracts that the Chinese clubs are ready to offer. Chelsea themselves lost Ramires to China and it is now reported that CPL outfit Shanghai SIPG are readying a mind blowing offer for the midfielder in January. Mikel, at 29, is not going to secure a move to the best clubs in Europe and it might be time for him to earn a fat paycheck and it might be time for Chelsea to cash in on a player who has offered nothing so far this season. Surely, the price that the Chinese outfit are ready to offer should lure Chelsea to sell, who will else risk losing Mikel on a free at the end of the season.
