Three Wingers Pochettino Must Prioritise For Tottenham This Summer Window

Tottenham Hotspur have been going from strength to strength under manager Mauricio Pochettino and have emerged as genuine title contenders over the past two years. After coming so close last year, the Lilywhites are the most likely to finish runners-up this season as well, behind runaway leaders Chelsea. The only blemish on what has been a very good season so far, remains the group stage exit from the Champions League and Tottenham will definitely want to improve on that the next campaign.

And for them to better that and have another go at the title, reinforcements in the summer are of paramount importance. And one position where Pochettino will be very keen to improve on the field will be on the flanks. The former Southampton manager has had a pacy wide man high on his shopping list since the summer of 2016, but failed to sign any of his targets and as a result had to make do with bringing in Moussa Sissoko, who has had a forgettable season so far.

Given Tottenham’s need for a speedy winger, here we pick out three wingers that would fit the perfectly and should be pursued by the North Londoners this summer transfer window:

Wilfried Zaha

The Crystal Palace speedster has been pursued by Spurs since the summer of last year, but haven’t been able to sign him. But they should not stop the chase as he could be the man to provide them with further impetus in the final third.

In what has been a faltering season for the Eagles, Zaha has been one of the very few bright spots and has been their best player this term. The 24-year old, in his 22 league appearances, has netted four goals and has also chalked up six assists to his name. Zaha has the ability to stretch the opposition defences with his speed and has a penchant for going past defenders with pace and power.

Fast, direct and tricky with the ball at his feet, the former Manchester United man could be the solution for Pochettino. And with Palace heading for relegation, it wouldn’t prove too difficult to prise the winger away from Palace.

Zaha might be the signing that could change things at Tottenham.

Riyad Mahrez

The last year’s champion has had a difficult season this year with his team struggling for form, but everyone knows the quality that he possesses and adding him to their ranks could turn Tottenham into a much stronger force.

Mahrez has scored 7 times so far this season for Leicester City and has three assists to go with as well. While those are not bad returns, the standards the Algerian set for himself last season means much better things were expected of him. However, it should be noted that out of the seven strikes he has netted, four have come in the Champions League, indicating that he can perform at the biggest of the stages.

The 26-year old is pacey, has great skills on the ball, and is an excellent crosser of the ball who can also hit from distance. Adding him will give an entirely new dimension to the Tottenham attack and with Leicester City looking likely to head towards the drop, the player would be tempted to join a Champions league club.

Riyad Mahrez would be a brilliant signing for Tottenham.

Demarai Gray

The 20-year old Demarai Gray may not be one of the biggest names in the footballing world but the youngster has shown immense potential and is definitely one for the future and as a result, Tottenham have identified him as a potential target.

Gray has been sparingly used by Leicester this season with Claudio Ranieri not completely convinced with the former Birmingham starlet’s ability to work with his teammates, but he has always posed questions to the opposition defences each time he has taken the field for the Foxes. The English youth international has two goals and two assists this term and if given a longer run in the team, could develop into a fine winger.

Gray is young, fast and has shown loads of promise in his fledgling career. A player who fits the bill perfectly for Tottenham and sits well with their recruitment policy, he could also cost much less compared to the other options and would bring in more flair and directness to Spurs’ attack.

Gray might be unproven, but his potential is unquestionable.
