Three Transfer Blunders Tottenham Have Made Recently Including This Swansea Star

Since the new format of the Premier League started, Spurs came their closest to winning a title last season, as they were red hot on the heels of Leicester City, remaining in close pursuit until their campaign fell over with 4 games to go.

This term, they look more like a team aiming for a top 4 finish as opposed to a title. And despite having the youngest squad and some crop of quality players, things would have been way better if some experienced veterans were still at the White Hart Lane.

3 of such were sold, and one can only imagine how more convincing Pochettino’s side would be if they still had 1 or all of these players the north London club chose to sell.

Modric

For £30million, the Croatian midfield ace remains a steal, and since Real Madrid secured his services from Spurs in 2012, he has gone ahead to become one of the cheapest Galacticos they have ever acquired.

Tottenham might have become a better club in terms of keeping their players of recent, but some few seasons back, selling for the profit was the norm. And it wasn’t surprising when they let the immensely talented Modric depart for Bernabeu for such a huge price by their standards.

But how better and experienced they would have been in their title pursuits last season with Modric pulling the strings in the middle of the park can only be anyone’s guess.

The 31-year-old has grown into one of the best midfielders in the world since departing White Hart Lane, and he would have too if he remained at the north London club.

Modric’s influence has seen Madrid win 2 Champions League, and 4 other trophies. Tottenham have won nothing since selling him, but the chances are they could have if they didn’t sell him.

Gylfi Sigurðsson

Since the Iceland international left White Hart Lane in 2014, his form for Swansea has been fine, as he has weighed in more goals in every of his 2 seasons at the Liberty Stadium than he ever did while at Tottenham.

While Spurs boast of powerful midfielders in Dembele, Sissoko and Wanyama, none lands more goals and assists than the 27-year-old Icelandic star. This season already, only Harry Kane (7) has scored more goals than Sigurðsson (4) amongst all Spurs players.

The versatility he brings to fore would have also benefited Tottenham in many ways, as they have come up short of depth in some positions this term. Gylfi has played in centre midfield, attacking midfield, on the right and left wings and also as a centre forward for Swansea this season alone.

Such players don’t come along every other transfer window, and while he isn’t the most spectacular and extraordinary player there is, there is no denying that he would have come very handy for Mauricio Pochettino if Tottenham didn’t sell him.

Jermain Defoe

The 2004 Tottenham Player of the Year spent 11 seasons over the course of 2 stints at the White Hart Lane and remains a club icon till this day.

But should Spurs have let him finally leave in 2008 having returned following 2 seasons away at Portsmouth?

While goals scoring is the least of Tottenham’s problems, the overdependence on Kane for the goals hasn’t given them the much expected winning edge, as even if he scores 30 league goals, they might not be enough to fire the club to a first ever Premier League title.

Defoe brings experience and goals to the table – and he has 150 of them in the league already. In 15 Premier League seasons as a first team player for West Ham, Portsmouth, Tottenham and Sunderland, the 34-year-old has only failed to hit double figures in front of goals on 6 occasions.

He has 8 in 14 already, and if he had remained for much longer or till date at Tottenham, his goals could have helped them to more than just a League Cup.
