Three Reasons Why Signing This £16m Defender Is A Good Move By Arsenal

Arsenal are heading to a new season with one trusted lieutenant from their defence missing. Bacary Sagna has left the club to join Manchester City for a much higher wage and Arsene Wenger has gone on to sign Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle United as a replacement. The  choice for Wenger was simple as he wanted to have the first choice French right back in his team and after the World Cup, it can be confidently said that he has done that.

Deschamps preferred Debuchy over Sagna in the entire tournament and that must have lifted the spirits of the Arsenal fans. But then the question arises as to why Wenger has gone to sign another right back Calum Chambers from Southampton for a decent sum of money and a lot of the supporters are not happy with this transfer. Although the price of Chambers can cause a few doubts in the minds of many, especially when he was not even a regular at Southampton, we believe that it is a great deal for Arsenal and the club would be hugely beneficial from this deal. We provide three reasons to support our statement.

Versatility

Calum Chambers is a player who is primarily a right back, but is equally effective as a right deep lying midfielder and even a right sided attacking player, not to forget his ability to play at centre back as well. It’s not often that we get players who can man these many positions with such ease and Chambers is a rare breed of player. His runs down the wings are fast and sharp and keep the defenders of the opposition alert. He can cut in or deliver nice precise cross which could be vital to the teams. He is a player who is mould for the English Premier League and he is the kind of players managers want in their team, while and ready to fill in a number of spots.

The age factor

In today’s transfer market, even half a decent player is costing the managers a fortune. Else how would one describe the astronomical fee paid by Manchester United for Luke Shaw? The trick is to catch them early and when they are still unproven. Calum Chambers is a 19 year old player who can do wonders for the club for the next decade and even beyond. He has shown the early promise and it is now on a brilliant manager to count on the talent. Arsene Wenger is a master of this art and under him Chambers can go on to become one of the best in the Premier League.

Back ups

One of the reasons that Arsenal’s title challenge fizzed way earlier than expected was because of the lack of quality back ups in the team. They had a wafer thin squad and that cost them league. This season Arsene Wenger is determined not to commit the same mistake and rather invest in the squad. While teams like Chelsea and City have a substantially large squad and Liverpool looking to utilise the Suarez money to have a requisite squad, Arsenal cannot be far behind. Signing the likes of Ospina and Chambers is a step in that direction and it will provide Arsenal with the stability that they should have had long ago.
