Tottenham’s fortunes would transform instantly if Pochettino strengthens these 3 key positions in January

Three positions Tottenham Hotspur must strengthen in January

Tottenham Hotspur broke their club record to sign midfielder Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon and they also signed creative midfielder Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis.

However, the Lilywhites are struggling to find their form due to a few departures and injuries. With the January transfer window set to arrive, let’s have a look at three positions that coach Mauricio Pochettino should strengthen.

Right-back

Tottenham failed to replace Kieran Trippier, who left the Lilywhites to join La Liga giants Atletico Madrid. It looks like Pochettino has made a big mistake by not signing anyone as a replacement.

Serge Aurier

The Argentine chose academy youngster Kyle Walker-Peters to fill the gap at the beginning of the season. Walker-Peters started the Lilywhites’ first three Premier League games but an injury ruled him out of action. He is yet to play a single minute after the injury, despite getting fit.

First-choice right-back Serge Aurier has been playing but his lack of discipline has led Pochettino to play Moussa Sissoko in that position. In fact, it wouldn’t be wrong to suggest that Aurier is playing regular football only because the manager has run out of options.

Striker

Even though they have one of the best strikers in the world – Harry Kane, the Lilywhites lack a proper backup. Spurs let Fernando Llorente leave the club as a free agent and now, they often turn towards midfielders Lucas Moura and Heung-Min Son when Kane is unavailable.

Harry Kane

Kane has suffered long-term injuries in the past and bringing in a striker would be a wise move. It will decrease the pressure on Kane’s shoulders and Pochettino must do this.

Goalkeeper

The Lilywhites were fully dependent on Hugo Lloris and an injury to the World Cup winner has forced Pochettino to turn towards Paulo Gazzaniga.

Spurs have also re-signed Michel Vorm, who left the club after his contract expired. Gazzaniga put in a heroic performance against Liverpool but he has conceded seven goals in just four appearances.

Thus, Spurs need to sign a proven goalkeeper in order to fight their way back into the top six.
