Three Players Claude Puel Should Target For Leicester City In January

Claude Puel’s appointment as the new Leicester City manager has grabbed the headlines. The former Southampton manager has achieved success, managing the likes of AS Monaco, Lyon and Nice. The stint with the Saints may not have been the best but there is certainly no doubting Puel’s credentials. He is what Leicester City need in order to bring a more stable and balanced outlook to the squad.

The Foxes did not start the new campaign all that strongly. A few weeks back, they were teetering dangerously close to the relegation zone. However, with Puel at the helm, things will be different.

The January window is coming up and there will be plenty of chances for Puel to sign new recruits in an attempt to refresh the squad. Here’s a look at three possible players Leicester could target in the upcoming transfer window.

Jeremy Pied – Southampton

Puel’s path first crossed with Pied when he managed the right-back at Lyon. The duo established a solid relationship and Pied actually moved to Nice and Southampton in order to be with Puel. However, injury restricted Pied to just four appearances in his maiden season at St. Mary’s.

Right now for Leicester City, Danny Simpson is their only specialist in Pied’s position. Going forward, fixtures will get tougher and Puel could do with having an able back-up he has worked with in the past.

James McCarthy – Everton

Ever since Danny Drinkwater left to join Chelsea, there has been a shocking lack of control in the Leicester City midfield. The problems were evident after N’golo Kante left, which has only been accentuated further in Drinkwater’s absence. Thus, central midfield should be a priority area for Puel, making McCarthy a worthy candidate.

The Everton midfielder is a tough-tackling ball-winner in the centre of the pitch and has a nasty streak which, when channeled appropriately, enhances his game. The 26-year-old still has top-class football to offer, and could prove to be a valuable addition for the Foxes.

Ben Gibson – Middlesbrough

Leicester have already completed the transfer of Hull City’s Maguire but they could do with another quality centre-back. Gibson enjoyed a stellar campaign last season, despite Boro’s relegation. The 24-year-old’s performances even earned him an England call-up and playing in the top-flight would definitely keep him in Gareth Southgate’s thoughts. Leicester’s defence is ageing and along with Maguire, Gibson would be an investment for the future.
