Why Everton must beat Tottenham and Dortmund to sign Maxi Gomez

According to a report from Football Espana, Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund are keeping tabs on Celta Vigo star Maxi Gomez.

The 22-year-old Uruguayan has netted seven goals and assisted a further four times in 11 league appearances for Celta Vigo this season. The report claims Maxi Gomez has a €50m release clause at Estadio Balaidos, meaning it’s clear Tottenham and Dortmund have to stump up a lot of money to sign the striker.

After a blistering start to the 2018/19 La Liga campaign, Everton must surely enter the race for Maxi Gomez.

Maxi Gomez

Maxi Gomez made his move to Celta Vigo last season from Uruguayan club Defensor Sporting and was an instant hit in the La Liga. The Uruguayan burst into prominence in the Spanish top flight last season, scoring 17 goals and supplying a further four assists from 36 appearances in all competitions.

Everton are in dire need of a clinical goalscorer after their struggles in front of goal this campaign. Under Marco Silva, the Toffees have played an exciting brand football but they have found it difficult to turn the chances into goals.

Richarlison and Gylfi Sigurdsson have shouldered the responsibility of scoring goals for Everton due to Cenk Tosun’s poor run of form.

Cenk Tosun, signed from Besiktas in January, struggled to score plenty of goals in his first season in the Premier League. The Turkish hit-man has only managed two goals from 11 Premier League appearances, forcing Marco Silva to tweak his tactics and use Richarlison up front instead of playing him on the left wing.

The idea of using Richarlison has been hit and miss and while Tosun is by no means a bad striker, Everton clearly are in need of more firepower in attack. And the Toffees could do themselves a huge favour by bringing in Maxi Gomez in January.

Gomez is a powerful striker who is excellent with his link-up play and can beat defenders with his burst of pace. He’s fantastic in the air and has already shown an innate ability to play with another forward Iago Aspas at Celta.

The Uruguayan is tenacious, blessed with excellent aerial ability and footballing intelligence to create space for himself as well as his teammates. Gomez is not only a deadly finisher in front of goal but he is creative and has the vision as well to set his teammates in behind the opposition’s backline with clever passes.

To put things into perspective, finding another striker in January is an absolute necessity for Everton. And Silva can’t do much better than bringing Maxi Gomez to Merseyside to solve his team’s goalscoring woes.
