This out-of-favour Real Madrid starlet could be Man United’s long-term solution to their midfield woes – agreed?

Manchester United opinion: Should the Red Devils move for Marcos Llorente?

After the season that they’ve had, Manchester United’s entire squad needs overhauling. It’s not just the case of adding one new player but instead adding at least four or five new ones.

From their back-line all the way to their front-line, the club need to take a long hard look at the team and decide if it’s one that can win them a championship.

For example, the likes of Ashley Young, Phil Jones, Antonio Valencia and even Nemanja Matic have no business being on their team-sheet based on this year’s performances. Sure, once upon a time, they were decent players but now, their time has come to leave the club with their head held high.

While the club have been linked with a move for both Idrissa Gueye and Declan Rice (Evening Standard), they’ve also been linked with a move for Marcos Llorente.

The Daily Star has reported as such and for a club looking for a defensive anchor, you cannot go wrong with Llorente. A midfielder by trade, the Spaniard is the definition of an anchor.

In the little that he has played for Real Madrid, Llorente has played as the lone pivot in a three-man midfield and has done it with style.

A former attacking midfielder, the 24-year-old has adapted to his deeper role, making his senior debut in 2014. Since then, he has only improved even further with time helping him hone his skills.

Add that to his innate understanding of the way the game works and his defensive nuance, it all folds together perfectly for Manchester United.

If they do manage to keep Paul Pogba, then someone like Marcos Llorente will help the Frenchman flourish. Not only will he take over any defensive work that Pogba has to do, but the 24-year-old will also help out offensively.

That is something that Matic struggled to do but Marcos Llorente can do everything the Serbian could and then some. It’s why he would be close to the perfect deputy for Matic and with Manchester City also in the race (Daily Star), getting one over on them would be priceless.

Conclusion

Marcos Llorente is very good at what he does but Real Madrid, unfortunately, are not giving him a chance to show exactly what he can do.

Instead, they continue to use ageing stars and that is something Manchester United have to take advantage of. With proper game time under his belt, Llorente has the potential to be the Red Devils’ lynchpin but only if a move takes place.
