Rodgers joining hands with his former Celtic protege would pay off rich dividends for Leicester City – agreed?

Leicester City Opinion: Why the Foxes should go for Callum McGregor

According to a report from Leicester Mercury, Celtic star Callum McGregor wants to leave Scotland and join Leicester City this summer.

Brendan Rodgers was instrumental in overseeing Callum McGregor’s development into one of the best players in the Scottish Premiership. The pair together won seven trophies at Celtic.

McGregor, 26, made close to 70 appearances across all competitions last season, helping the Hoops achieve a historic treble-treble. After enjoying a trophy-laden spell with Celtic, the Scotsman wants to leave the club and reunite with Rodgers at Leicester City.

This summer represents Rodgers’ first chance to make a mark on the squad he was given when he walked into the club during the final third of the campaign.

So far, the Foxes have made some big-money summer signings this summer, most notably central midfielder Youri Tielemans, forward Ayoze Perez and full-back James Justin. Yet, Rodgers would like to get at least a couple of new players to break into the top six next season.

Rodgers has the likes of Wilfred Ndidi, Hamza Choudhury, Nampalys Mendy and Youri Tielemans as options in central midfield. Interest in Callum McGregor suggests the Leicester boss isn’t yet satisfied with the midfield department and wants to add more depth.

Last season McGregor played a vital role from a central area, featuring both as a no.10 and as a more traditional central midfielder in Celtic. During the course of the season he managed 10 assists, displaying his creativity and vision to unlock defences on a regular basis.

The addition of McGregor would boost things up next season and given how well the Scot has played for the Hoops this past season, it could be a great addition for the Foxes. His acquisition would allow Rodgers to use him in multiple positions across the midfield.

The 26-year-old’s experience, versatility and creative abilities will prove to solve a big problem for Leicester and it’s a move that will only help both parties.

In terms of his attributes, the Scottish international has a good turn of pace on the ball, is a dynamic figure in central midfield to help the team recover possession, is a good passer of the ball and can chip in with important goals as well.

With James Maddison making the no.10 position his own last season, it would be ideal that Leicester have competition in the team, who can push the Englishman in every way. McGregor could be the man for them.

Verdict

All in all, we can conclude by saying that the Foxes are right to acquire the services of Callum McGregor. They must meet Celtic’s asking price and get this deal done as quickly as possible.
