This 26-year-old Serie A engine would be perfect for Tottenham and Poch must get him in January

Why Tottenham Hotspur must go all out to sign Remo Freuler in January

Tottenham Hotspur didn’t make a single signing in the summer, but they are seemingly doing well as they occupy the second spot in the Premier League table with one point separating them and Manchester City.

The north Londoners haven’t been glowingly spoken about being one of the title contenders this season but going by their current position in the standings and form, they remain very well in the mix. A good January transfer window can certainly propel them up for the second half of the season, thereby making them one of the three genuine title challengers this season.

One area Mauricio Pochettino should target in January is the midfield. Mousa Dembele is currently in the final year of his contract and there is every possibility that Spurs would not offer him a new deal due to his recurrent injury problems in the last few years. Victor Wanyama has also been plagued by injuries since last season, while Eric Dier is sidelined until the New Year.

Injuries to Wanyama, Dembele and Dier has left Pochettino very light in the midfield department, with the Spurs boss relying on Moussa Sissoko and Harry Winks. That said, Spurs must make a move for Atalanta midfield ace Remo Freuler.

Since moving to Atalanta from Swiss club from FC Luzern, Remo Freuler has become one of the most complete midfielders in the Serie A. He has been in really good form this season as well, scoring a goal and supplying two assists in 17 league games.

The Switzerland international fits the profile of a Tottenham player. He is a central midfielder by trade but equally adept playing in a holding role or as a No.10. Remo Freuler isn’t a flashy midfielder and loves to keep things simple. Calm and composed on the ball, the 26-year-old has the ability to pick out a pass and slip in killer through balls behind the opposition backline.

He is a tireless runner, reads the game well and never hesitates to stick out a leg to stop the opposition from advancing. Freuler’s distribution is accurate and he constantly looks to play forward passes. Blessed with a fantastic technique, the Swiss ace is equally adept at creating and scoring goals.

However, Freuler might take some time to get used to the physicality of the Premier League and it would be interesting to see whether he would be able to cope with the demands. But in terms of his overall qualities, the former FC Luzern man ticks all the boxes for Pochettino.

At 26, he is entering the peak years of his career and Spurs must get a deal done in January as Freuler could turn out to be a brilliant long-term investment for the club.
