Arsenal opinion: Emery considering Martinez as second choice – good move?

According to the Sun, Arsenal and Unai Emery are monitoring their third-choice keeper, Emiliano Martinez’s performances at Reading this season. The Gunners are looking to promote the 26-year-old to be the second choice at the club after Petr Cech steps down in the summer.

The Argentine joined the Championship side in January on a loan deal until the end of the season and has already impressed. He was named as the man of the match on his Reading debut against Bolton.

Martinez joined the Gunners in 2012 as a 19-year-old from Argentinian side Atletico Independiente. He has played 14 times for the first-team and has kept 7 clean sheets so far. But the Argentine has made his name in a number of loan spells across England and Spain.

He has always been the third choice at the club since the departure of Vito Manone in 2013. The Gunners should give the youngster a chance in the summer, especially with the shortage of world-class keepers in the market.

Martinez’s loan spells in England include Oxford United, Sheffield United, Rotterham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers and now Reading. The 26-year-old also spent a season on loan in Spain with Getafe.

Martinez can learn a lot by playing just the domestic cup competitions for the Gunners, with Bernd Leno set to take charge of Premier League and European duties. Martinez’s experience in the lower leagues along with the guidance of Unai Emery will help him ease himself in Arsenal colours.

The 6ft 5in giant has brilliant hands and has proved his ability to pluck balls out of the air in recent loan spells. Despite his size, Martinez is quick off his line and can be used as a modern-day sweeper keeper.

The Argentine is a good shot-stopper as well and his frame doesn’t stop him from getting down quickly. Martinez’s current loan spell has been outstanding and he has become a fan favourite at the Madejski Stadium after just 6 games.

Conclusion

Martinez is Arsenal through and through and the values of the club are embedded in him. The Argentine takes pride in wearing the Gunners shirt and although it is a massive step in his career, it is one that he thoroughly deserves.
