Liverpool Opinion: Reds must push to sign Memphis Depay in the summer
According to a report from the Mirror, Liverpool have been urged to make a move for Lyon forward Memphis Depay. The report claims that the Dutch winger has unfinished business in the Premier League and it is suggested that Liverpool could be the ideal destination for him.
Memphis Depay is a 25-year-Old Dutch winger who currently plies his trade for Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyon where he is often utilised in the central striker’s role as well. He is one of Lyon’s most prized possessions and his talent is unquestionable.
Born in the quaint Dutch town of Moordrecht, the former Manchester United man has been a bright prospect from a young age. He was always touted to achieve big things in the future, right from the days at his hometown club.
Having been a part of the Sparta Rotterdam team until 2006, he was signed by PSV in the summer of that year and from then his development happened at an alarmingly rapid pace. He made it up the ranks at PSV with ease and within 6 years, he made his way into the first team picture.
The three years he spent at PSV set him apart as one of the brightest young talents capable of reaching massive levels in the future. This prompted a move from Manchester United, who secured the Dutchman’s signing in the summer of 2015.
After an extremely lacklustre spell at Old Trafford that was riddled with injuries and tired displays, he was sold to Lyon in 2017 in a cut-price fee. Since this move though, he has looked like a player reborn and has been scoring goals at a fairly decent rate too.
He is a pacy customer, who boasts a massive attacking arsenal and also uses his intelligence extremely well while making forward runs or passes. His finishing has also drastically improved over the last few years and this has seen him taking up the striker’s role for both his club and country.
The 25-year-old can provide the right kind of competition to the Liverpool frontline which seems pretty much set at this point with Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge outsiders.
Roberto Firmino’s false-nine style of play hasn’t worked at times this season while Mohamed Salah has also looked quite ordinary. That should be motivation enough for Jurgen Klopp to go ahead and sanction a deal for this talented Dutchman.
