This 24-year-old star’s exit will not hurt Rangers at all and here’s why it would actually benefit Gerrard

Joe Dodoo’s decision to depart Rangers looks ideal for all parties

According to BBC, out-of-favour striker Joe Dodoo has agreed to terminate his contract with Rangers, with the report claiming that the 24-year-old has departed the club by mutual consent.

Signed by Mark Warburton back in the summer of 2016, Dodoo struggled to establish himself as a mainstay in Rangers’ attacking ranks and scored a total of 5 goals in 27 appearances for the Gers in all competitions over the course of his three years at Ibrox.

Dodoo featured sporadically for Rangers in the 2016-17 campaign but he slipped drastically down the pecking order since the start of the following season. The Ghanaian played only twice for Rangers in the last couple of seasons, spending time on loan at Charlton Athletic and Blackpool south of the border.

The 24-year-old never really got a look in from Steven Gerrard ever since he took charge of the club last year and the writing seemed to be on the wall for the versatile striker.

It was only a matter of time before he was going to be offloaded, either on loan or on a permanent basis, and Dodoo’s decision to end his nightmarish spell at Ibrox doesn’t come as a big surprise.

Born in Ghana, Dodoo migrated to England at a young age and rose through the youth ranks of Leicester City, making his Premier League debut for the Foxes in the 2015-16 season. Dodoo also scored a few goals for his boyhood club in the League Cup before leaving for League One outfit Bury on loan.

A move to Rangers just a year after his breakthrough at Leicester presented a big opportunity for Dodoo to fulfil his promise north of the border. However, it became evident after his failure in his debut season at Ibrox that he didn’t have the quality to consistently make an impact at the highest level.

Steven Gerrard completed a massive squad overhaul this summer, with as many as ten new signings coming through the door before the deadline on September 2.

The likes of Daniel Candeias, Gareth McAuley, Lee Wallace, Lee Hodson, Kyle Lafferty and Graham Dorrans either completed moves away from the club or were released, thus freeing up space for the new arrivals.

To put things into perspective, Joe Dodoo has become the last addition to the list of departures at Ibrox this summer but the termination of his contract by mutual consent isn’t likely to come back to haunt the Gers in the future.

The 24-year-old was already frozen out of the first-team picture and with the likes of Alfredo Morelos and Jermaine Defoe firing all guns blazing in the opening stages of the campaign, a call-up for Dodoo was never going to be on the cards.

The Ghanaian’s future at Rangers looked bleak, to be honest, and the fans would hardly rue his departure, given that the striker had failed to make any real impact in the past.

Now that he is freed from his contract at Ibrox, he might as well look to find himself another club to resurrect his career, which has been in a complete freefall since his move to Rangers.

All in all, Rangers parting ways with Dodoo is a clear indication from Gerrard that he is not prepared to hang around with any underachievers at the club.
