According to Football League World (h/t StokeonTrentLive), Stoke City and Cardiff City are interested in signing Barnsley midfielder Cameron McGeehan in January.
Cameron McGeehan, 24, made it into the League One Team of the Season as Barnsley won promotion last season and signed a new two-year deal with the club during the summer.
However, the 24-year-old finds himself suddenly out of favour under new boss Gerhard Struber, playing only 21 minutes in the five games since the Austrian’s arrival.
The midfielder made three appearances for Northern Ireland’s Under-21s before rejecting a call-up in September 2015.
He was included in Michael O’Neill’s senior team for the tour of Central America in 2018 but ultimately forced to withdraw due to an ankle injury.
With McGeehan currently struggling for game time at Barnsley, Stoke City must do everything to possible to beat Cardiff City to his signature next month.
Stoke have made a poor start to the Championship season, although their results have improved significantly since Michael O’Neill replaced Nathan Jones in charge at the Bet365 Stadium.
O’Neill began his Stoke career in excellent fashion, securing two wins in his opening two games. A series of poor results have since followed but the Potters bounced back with a 3-0 win over Luton Town.
Nonetheless, O’Neill should look for reinforcements during the winter transfer window in a bid to avoid relegation from the second-tier.
The Potters’ midfield has lacked bite and energy often this season, thus making someone like Cameron McGeehan perfect for O’Neill’s side.
McGeehan, who joined Barnsley from Luton Town in the summer of 2017, scored six goals in 36 appearances last season as the Tykes won promotion from the League One.
The former Chelsea youth has been an important player for Barnsley so far this season too, scoring twice in 12 league appearances – although he has been frozen out by new boss Gerhard Struber.
McGeehan would not only add quality to Stoke’s midfield but also add depth to the squad. The 24-year-old is a dynamic player, who would work well if O’Neill utilizes him alongside the likes of Joe Allen and Jordan Cousins.
Stoke has plenty of options in the middle of the park but McGeehan would offer them a different dimension. All in all, he could turn out to be an inspired addition for the Potters.
