West Bromwich Albion are having an absolute mixed bag of a season. Although it is highly entertaining and dynamic for the neutrals, it is a torturous experience for true Baggies fans.
To watch your team play beautiful, free-flowing football and score 3 brilliant goals only to concede 4 silly ones and drop all the points must be the worst feeling. For that to occur week in, week out must be really stressful for the fans.
Despite this rather pathetic season defensively, their league position doesn’t portray their issues in the best way. There are various underlying problems in the Baggies side that need to be solved before they can really be considered contenders.
Currently in 4th place after 35 games behind us, the Baggies are still behind leaders Norwich City by 9 points and behind 2nd-placed Leeds United by 7 points. Behind them though, Middlesbrough are hot on their trail with just a 2-point separation and a game in hand.
Their goalscoring record is the second best in the league behind only to league leaders Norwich, who have scored 4 times more. Also, the Canaries have a better defensive record as well, which is probably why they seem to be comfortable at the top of the table.
Dwight Gayle and Jay Rodriguez have provided the goals but one position they have failed to address effectively is the right-back role. The preferred choice are Everton and Manchester City loanees Mason Holgate and Tosin Aderabioyo respectively.
While they are both originally centre-halves, the fact that they are set to return to their parent clubs at the end of the season should be motivation enough for the Baggies to sign a natural right-back. For that, they needn’t look past Toulouse right-back Kelvin Amian.
The 21-year-old is a player who developed through the Toulouse youth academy and has made multiple appearances in the French youth setup, including the 10 games he played for the France U21 side.
A pacy right-back who likes to make strong and bombarding runs down the flanks, his overlaps are extremely unpredictable and he times his runs in behind to perfection often as well. His crossing will also be an asset to a side with a striker like Jay Rodriguez.

At 21, he has already made 80 appearances in the Ligue 1 including the 22 he has made this season. His movement on the flanks will suit the Baggies’ style of play while his height should help him settle into the English game. This is a move that they have to make and the sooner it’s done, the better.
