According to a report from Sky Sports on Tuesday, Harry Maguire was the subject of a £70m bid from Manchester United, which was later rejected by Leicester City.
The Telegraph later stated that the Leicester hierarchy is demanding a £90m sum for one of their star players. Today, a report from the Metro has claimed that Arsenal are also looking to sign the England international.
Maguire’s rise in recent years has been phenomenal. He has won a Player of the Season award at each of his last 3 clubs, which include Sheffield United, Hull City and Leicester City. This suggests that Maguire has been consistent for all the clubs that he’s played for.
However, he really shone into the limelight after his performances in the 2018 FIFA World Cup, where he was not just one of the best players for the England national team but one of the best in the tournament.
His comfort in bringing the ball out of the back, his reading of the game and dominance in the air endeared him to English fans. He has been one of the compelling stories from the last few seasons.
He’s one of the most wanted players in the Premier League right now, with the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal all vying for his signature.
Let’s now take a look at who, among Arsenal and Manchester United, need his signature more urgently:
Arsenal
Arsenal looked poised for a Champions League spot last season after making inroads into the top-4 but a collapse towards the end combined with their surprising loss to Chelsea showcased their defensive frailties.
Arsenal have been crying out for a leader at back. A club that was once famed for their great backline led by Tony Adams has now got one of the softest underbellies in the Premier League.
Maguire would be a great coup not just for what he offers in his play but also with his authority and commanding nature, which Arsenal have needed for years.
Manchester United
Manchester United, over the last few years besides the last, have had a decent defensive record. Their struggles at the back are hard to quantify because they’ve had David De Gea to get them out of sticky situations.
They also don’t lack the leaders and personalities that Arsenal lack; with Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, David De Gea and Romelu Lukaku being more than capable. United’s need for Maguire stems from their volatile dressing room.
United showed in their first few months under Solskjaer that they are a lot better than they seem but are a disjointed group and Maguire could go a long way in helping with the dressing room harmony and signing from the same hymn sheet as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

If it were to come down to urgent need, Maguire would be more important to Arsenal than he is to Manchester United.
Manchester United need to sustain the form they showcased under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first 3 months to get back to being one of the top dogs in the Premier League.
