The Almost Signed XI Of Liverpool – Including This Manchester United Bound Superstar

Another almost signing for Liverpool almost took place but once again the Reds were unlucky as Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who was once touted to join Liverpool before he moved to Borussia Dortmund, signed for Manchester United over the weekend.

Liverpool though have been extremely unlucky in terms of such signings and more often than not, they have lost out on some top quality stars due to their own ineptitude in transfer dealings. We look back over the years and list out an XI which they could have signed, had they only been more decisive in their transfers.

Wayne Hennessey

The current Welsh international goalkeeper was expected to sign for Liverpool but in place came Brad Jones. We can’t fault the Australian for all that he had done but certainly Hennessey now seems to be a better player than the former Liverpool keeper.

Phil Jones

The former Blackburn man was high on the list of players that Liverpool wanted to sign in defence but he opted to move to Manchester United and won many trophies with the Red Devils.

Nemanja Vidic

Many would not know this but Nemanja Vidic was actually scouted by Liverpool way before United but a deal could not take place with the Serbian and the rest we know is history.

Dani Alves

Rafa Benitez almost signed the Brazilian from Sevilla but only for a negotiation issue of 1 million pounds. Alves stayed at Seville and then moved to Barcelona, oh what a deal this could have been.

Mohamed Diame

The current Hull City player could have signed for Liverpool but the deal couldn’t take place due to the fact that Kenny Dalglish was sacked.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan

Mkhitaryan was to sign for Liverpool but he joined Borussia Dortmund and now plays for Manchester United.

Alexis Sanchez

The Chilean didn’t want to move to Liverpool and was expected to replace Luis Suarez but the Uruguayan moved to Barcelona and Brendan Rodgers had to settle for Mario Balotelli.

Mario Gotze

Mario Gotze could have joined Liverpool but Dalglish opted to sign Jordan Henderson instead. Do we really need to say more?

Cristiano Ronaldo

The one that got away, Liverpool had actually made first contact with Sporting Lisbon for the player but didn’t want to pay the sum of money that United were willing to.

Diego Costa

The former Atletico Madrid star was expected to move to Liverpool and partner Luis Suarez but that did not take place as the opted to stay at Madrid and moved to Chelsea later.

Mario Gomez

When Mario Gomez was busy scoring goals for VFB Stuttgart, he was expected to sign for Liverpool but we got Andy Carroll in the team to play for the Reds while Gomez went on to Bayern to score all kind of goals and to break records.
