Leicester City vs Brighton report: Leicester City match report

High-flying Leicester City retained the second position on the table after they beat Brighton 2-0 at the Amex Stadium on Saturday amidst late VAR drama.

After a goalless first half, there was no shortage of drama as Jamie Vardy was made to re-take a penalty after James Maddison’s rebounded goal was disallowed. But Vardy scored from the spot after Ayoze Perez had given the Foxes the lead on the break.

Two minutes in, Perez’s header hit the crossbar after Harvey Barnes had picked him out at the back post. Five minutes later, Vardy saw a flicked header tipped over by Matt Ryan. On the stroke of half-time, Vardy was played through by James Maddison but miscued his dink over the Brighton keeper.

Just after the hour mark, the Foxes took the lead. Maddison played in Vardy, who raced away and put the ball on a plate for Perez, which the Spaniard tapped in. It would have been 2-0 two minutes later but Ryan kept out Vardy’s effort.

Brighton tested City’s defence under the torrential rain and also saw a good penalty appeal waved away. However, Rodgers’ Foxes sealed the win with 10 minutes to go as they scored a second under controversial circumstances.

Substitute Demarai Gray was pushed by Adam Webster and referee Mike Dean pointed to the spot. Vardy’s initial effort was well saved by Ryan but Maddison headed in the rebound. However, he was inside the box and the spot-kick was ordered to be retaken.
