Stoke City opinion: Should the Potters sign Nick Powell?

According to Daily Mail, Stoke City are close to signing Wigan Athletic star Nick Powell.

The former Manchester United midfielder will be officially out of contract at Wigan Athletic on the 1st of July and the report adds that Stoke are the front-runners.

It’s a move that has hit the rumour mill in recent weeks, with the 25-year-old linked with moves away. But, it seems that the Potters will win the race and it’s a move that makes a lot of sense for the club, especially given the state of their team.

Having already let Ibrahim Affellay go earlier in the season and now Bojan Krikic has been linked with a move away, it leaves the Potters without a bonafide attacking midfielder.

It’s one of the reasons why they’ve struggled to thrive this season, barely managing to survive in the second-tier of English football.

It’s going to be a rather busy summer for the Bet365 outfit. Yet no matter who they add, Powell or at least an attacking midfielder be their top concern.

Given the fact that Nick Powell will be a free agent and the fact that he is an attacking midfielder who is doing well in the Championship, a move does make sense. The 25-year-old has the ability to change a game on its head when he wants.

It’s a rare trait, one that even Sir Alex Ferguson noticed in the young midfielder but at Stoke City, Powell could finally achieve it. Furthermore, his creativity and ability in the final third is something that the Potters have missed at times this season.

It’s an ability that can change a game on its head and their creator in chief this season has been Tom Ince. The 27-year-old leads the assists charts with just 9 to his name in all competitions, with James McClean a close second with 7.

Thus, it’s no wonder that Stoke City finished 16th in the Championship and with just 45 goals to their name, it’s the third lowest tally. That is ahead of only relegated Bolton Wanderers and Ipswich Town, two sides who finished their season sitting at the bottom of the league.

Things need to change for Stoke City and someone like Nick Powell can bring about that change.

Conclusion

Nick Powell may not be the same player that Sir Alex Ferguson once saw but the 25-year-old is still miles ahead creatively as compared to any Stoke City star.

They need to add that kind of creative boost to their team, if not to thrive then at least to help them survive a few more seasons.
