Why Tottenham Hotspur should have signed Ben Chilwell

Tottenham Hotspur were in dire straits before the North London derby and desperately needed a result against rivals Arsenal last weekend.

This was the first time that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino was under the cosh since becoming manager, having had relative success with the budgetary constraints.

They led by 2 goals, relying on their ability to hit Arsenal on the counter-attack, which is similar to what they did in the game against Manchester City. The problem that Spurs have faced this season, however, is their inability to break down teams that play deep and sit in a low block.

They don’t have enough creativity from their full-backs and are far too reliant on Christian Eriksen to pull something out of the hat. One player they have been linked with in the past, who would have helped out from that left-hand side, is Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell.

Danny Rose

The England international has been one of the best left-backs in the league in recent years. He’s fantastic defensively and can glide with the ball as he’s a very good dribbler and doesn’t lose possession easily. He registered 5 assists last season and will only improve since he’s just 22.

Mauricio Pochettino has shown his knack for developing young players in the past and has done so with many English talents.

Spurs are in danger of stagnating with many of their senior members, who have been important for the squad in recent years, coming to the end of their contracts.

Spurs currently have Danny Rose in the final year of his contract and have Ben Davies deputizing, both of whom are very good options. However, they need to start building another team if they want to continue challenging for honours.

Despite their best efforts, they seem to fall just short every summer and they should have signed someone like Ben Chilwell to make a statement of their intent.
