Why The Summer Transfer Window Is Crucial For Tottenham And Pochettino Should Cherry Pick His Signings

Share

After narrowly missing out on the Premier League title to Leicester City last season, Mauricio Pochettino’s side have managed to carry their momentum into this season as they currently are in the midst of the battle for a place in the top-4 in the points table. Spurs have a decent chance of qualifying for the Champions League next season which might see the manager spend big yet again this summer. But for more than one reason, the transfer window at the end of the current season is easily the most important one in recent times.

The London outfit were not regarded as top-4 rivals before the previous season and though they were brilliant in the previous season, many did not expect them to repeat it this season. But the Spurs have pleasantly surprised the fans with some consistent football as they see themselves stand as the closet team to Chelsea at the top of the table. They have shown decent improvement under their current manager and though they have not been convincing in Europe, they have been productive in the domestic league.

The Lilywhites are expected to play in the Champions League next season, and Pochettino will need his squad to step up to the challenge next season. But he will also be looking to add star players to his squad in the summer and he will have to be extremely important in choosing his targets. This current season would be their last at White Hart Lane and hence the 2017-18 season will be one of transformation for the club. Every step they take towards the first game at the new stadium can affect their chances in the league for the years to come.

The Argentine manager has built one of the most exciting teams in England but there are a few shortcomings that he will try to eradicate this summer. Pochettino failed in his recruitment at the start of the season as he has failed to push any of the summer signings into his first team this season. But he cannot afford to have another unsuccessful transfer window as it might easily cause their downfall.

Tottenham have decent quality in the first team but are a bit weak in numbers for a couple of positions. Pochettino will need to find players who are ready to deputise when needed and also walk into the first team during contingencies. The Spurs fans will want their side to walk into their new stadium high on confidence and if Pochettino fails in his recruitment, they may well endure a barren season that can reflect on their performances at the new ground for years to come.

Tottenham are a team on the rise. The potential of their squad makes them one of the strongest teams in England. However, they have not been able to win the title or a trophy and if they fail to improve their squad, and their performances next season, they may well find it hard to establish themselves as one of the best in England for years to come.
