Every single day a new wonder kid catches the attention of the biggest clubs in the world, and a Portuguese starlet from Sporting Lisbon seems to be one of the greatest fixations of several giant European clubs like AC Milan and Real Madrid, but now it seems like Manchester United boss is keen to bring his fellow compatriot to Old Trafford, the outstanding winger Gelson Martins.
Mourinho’s side has been quite inconsistent through most of the season, and part of the problem has been the offence near the sidelines, as Anthony Martial is going through a big slump and is having a very mediocre season, while Juan Mata gives his best while playing in the middle, Henrikh Mkhitaryan hasn’t had many opportunities and Marcus Rashford is playing out of position, so it’s only natural to think that the Red Devils are going to look to improve this area during the winter or summer transfer window.
Martins has been closely followed by several teams since the past season, but he decided to stay in Portugal for at least one more season, and that’s been a very mature and right choice for the 21-year-old, who’s already shown during this UEFA Champions League what he’s capable of doing against outstanding teams like Borussia Dortmund and especially Real Madrid.
Gelson is an outstanding passer that often makes the right move in the offensive side of the field, finding his open teammates and setting them up beautifully, creating several chances per game and being a very generous player, as his 4 assists can show.
On top of that, he’s an amazing dribbler and an extremely dangerous shooter and finisher with both feet, and his ability to shake off defenders and run at a high pace make him a headache for every opposing defence. Last but not least, he’s also very committed on the defensive side of the pitch, something you don’t see very often in a youngster with those features.
The youngster is an extremely versatile guy on the offensive end, as he’s normally used as a right winger but he can play on both flanks of the pitch, behind the striker or even as a striker himself, although his lack of aerial prowess makes it a poor choice in that position right now.
Gelson is a really talented player that can totally improve United’s chances to score goals, something that’s making them struggle mightily this season, and at just 21 years old, you know there’s a lot of football ahead for this guy.
So, Sporting’s new wonder kid seem more than ready to contribute for a bigger team while having a bigger role, and given the fact that Mourinho often prefers to give minutes to his compatriots, it’ll be a very wise move for Gelson to actually sign for the Red Devils.
However, this would be a very expensive move, as his clause goes as high as 60 million pounds, but you know the Glazers aren’t afraid to break the bank in order to acquire the best players in the world, as they’ve already shown with the Paul Pogba signing.
