If there is one thing that Southampton needs to make sure that they have before the start of next season, it’s a bonafide goal scorer. The Saint’s biggest issue this season was their dependence on Danny Ings to score goals.
While the former Liverpool man did net his fair share, he only finished the season with 7 goals. What ended up saving the club was Shane Long finding a rich vein of form towards the end of the season, with the Irish international netting four in his last seven games.
It changed the season for the club and alongside James Ward-Prowse’s 7 goals, it saved Southampton from relegation. That revealed exactly why the club need to target a new striker in the summer window.
However, finding the right striker is easier said than done and it has to be someone who suits Ralph Hassenhuttl’s style of play at the same time. The Sun has revealed that Jordan Ayew has entered the fray.
The Swansea City man spent the season on loan at Crystal Palace. However, he failed to make the most of his time back in the Premier League, managing to score just the one goal in 20 appearances.
That is a massive drop from the seven goals he netted last season, which was one of the reasons why Roy Hodgson made the move.
But while Ayew’s struggles did match Crystal Palace’s, it shouldn’t put the Saints off the move. The 28-year-old will be a bargain, especially with Swansea City trying to recoup every cent of the £5million they spent on Ayew.
But combine that with his experience and proven consistency in front of goal, and it does make him a rather astute signing. Sure, there might be players in and around the world who would be better options.
But for a club like Southampton, who need that rotation star they would get few players that come as cheap as Jordan Ayew.
With time and under Ralph Hassenhuttl’s tenure, the 28-year-old will find his footing again in the Premier League. However, the former Aston Villa man shouldn’t be the first name on the shortlist.

Jordan Ayew isn’t the best striker in the world but he’s proven to be a rather brilliant option to come on as a super-sub. It’s where the 28-year old excels, using his pace and agility on the counter, which is what Southampton need.
