Rangers began their Scottish Premiership campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Kilmarnock away at the Rugby Park. Scott Arfield and Connor Goldson were the scorers for the Gers, while Stephen O’Donnell did equalise once for the home side.
After a bright start to the game, Steven Gerrard’s men took the lead in the 16th minute.
A James Tavernier cross found Nikola Katic in the box. The latter headed towards goal but Kilmarnock keeper Laurentiu Branescu was there to save the effort. However, the rebound fell into the path of Arfield who couldn’t miss from there.
After that, Rangers had a threat about them for the rest of the first half, but they didn’t score the second goal.
In the second half, Kilmarnock came back into the game and asked some questions to the Gers’ back line. Around the hour mark, Eamonn Brophy missed a great chance to equalise after making a good run towards the near post.
Then, seven minutes from time, Chris Burke produced a peach of a ball for O’Donnell to make the near post run and lash the ball into the roof of the Wes Foderingham net.
Just as when we thought the game would end in a draw, Rangers pushed for one last time in the stoppage time. They won a series of corners, out of which one was met superbly by Goldson and the ball went into the back of the net.
That goal was met with a pitch invasion from jubilant Rangers supporters, who were delighted by this victory the most.
All in all, a good start to the campaign for Gerrard’s men, who still need that killer instinct to challenge Celtic for the title. Here’s how their fans reacted on social media after this game:
