A stoppage-time goal from Patrick van Aanholt gave Crystal Palace a memorable 2-1 win Old Trafford after a toothless display by at Manchester United.
The Dutchman powered a shot past Manchester United keeper David De Gea after Paul Pogba lost possession to hand Palace their first league win at Old Trafford since 1989.
Jordan Ayew had capitalised on a defensive mistake to put Palace 1-0 up in the 32nd minute and the Red Devils were then left to rue a second costly penalty miss of the week as Marcus Rashford cannoned a shot off the inside of the post.
It was harsh on United, who enjoyed more than 70 per cent of possession and had 22 shots at Vicente Guaita’s goal, but the Eagles stuck to their plans and won their first game of the season.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer named an unchanged side despite Monday’s frustrating draw at Wolves and they looked comfortable and composed throughout the opening half an hour as they dominated possession and gradually built pressure. The visitors soaked up the pressure and defended well before stunning United by taking the lead.
Ayew scored against the run of play in the 32nd minute as Palace punished United’s lack of creativity in midfield and bite up front.
The second half was a similar story with the hosts launching a wave of attacks. Anthony Martial was livid he was not given a penalty after appearing to be pulled back by Martin Kelly after a VAR review. United were then awarded a penalty when Scott McTominay was brought down. After Paul Pogba’s miss on Monday, Rashford stepped up this time and hit the post.
Solskjaer’s side had another penalty shout when Rashford went down under a challenge from Joel Ward but VAR ruled against it. The hosts thought they had clinched a deserved point when Pogba dispossessed Wilfried Zaha and Daniel James executed a stunning finish into the top corner from inside the box.
But Palace had other ideas and after Pogba was dispossessed by Kouyate, Zaha ran into traffic, the ball fell for Van Aanholt to hit a powerful shot which went through De Gea.
