Smalling to miss the start of the season

Manchester United’s Chris Smalling will miss the start of the upcoming season after his surgery for a broken metatarsal.

He missed the Euro championships due to a groin injury which also kept him out of contention for the Olympics. Although he was training at the United’s Carrington HQ it was later confirmed that he has suffered a new set back in his fight to recover ahead of the new season

“It is a bad blow for the boy. He is only 22, he is young. Hopefully he gets over it,” said Ferguson. It is also believed that he could he out for a minimum of 10 weeks which would be a great loss for them

United will now have Rio Ferdinand and Phil jones as the first choice centre backs, although Vidic is back in training he is not fully fit and ready to start after missing out so many games last season .With Evans is still due to return it will be a difficult start for United
