Why Liverpool Can Challenge For The Title If They Sign Naby Keita And A Left-back This Summer

Almost two years into his tenure at Anfield, Jurgen Klopp has done some decent work with the squad at Anfield and is now taking Liverpool to the Champions League next season. However, the squad at his disposal still needs a few repairs if they are to compete with the best next season.

The Reds are desperate for a centre-back this summer, with Dejan Lovren far from convincing. But Klopp is not able to find the right man to add to his squad and is waiting on Virgil van Dijk, even after the embarrassing saga.

However, the manager is also looking to improve other areas and has been linked with a move for some of the finest players in Europe. One player constantly linked with a move to Anfield is RB Leipzig midfielder, Naby Keita. If Liverpool can add the Guinea international to their squad, they will solve one of the biggest problems they have had in recent times.

They may still have to spend on a genuine left-back this summer but will that make Liverpool genuine title contenders? Can Klopp go into the next season now, signing Keita and another left-back only?

The Reds have had their problems defensively but the partnership of Joel Matip and Lovren was fruitful. The Croatian star has not been consistent but is ranked among the top 10 defenders in Europe and has what it takes to turn into a beast.

He has also had little help from the midfielders in front of him, who have often left him exposed and adding Keita could solve that problem to a certain extent.

The 22-year old is not a CDM but his industry in the midfield makes him a huge asset for the side. Though he may not sit back and act as a shield to the backline, he is sure to improve the squad’s stability at the back.

Adding a top class left-back would make sure Lovren is not exposed often. The former Southampton man is strong in the air and is dominating at times but his inconsistency makes him a liability for a side that wants to compete for the title. But he is still a rare breed and Klopp might be able to go into the new season by adding a young centre back, with Lovren still as an option.

A Benjamin Mendy or someone like him will shore up the left-hand side of the defence and if Lovren can start strongly and show a change in form like Simon Mignolet did last season, Liverpool can genuinely compete for the title, with Keita and a new left-back in the squad, not to forget the addition of one Mohamed Salah this summer.
