Manchester United were one of the busiest clubs in the summer transfer window at the start of the season and their progress this season might see manager Jose Mourinho spend big yet again at the end of the season. With financial stability not an issue, Mourinho has been looking at some of the biggest stars in Europe and two players that can make Manchester United invincible, or atleast close to it, that are being linked to the club are Chelsea star Willian and Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld. Manchester United are ready to break the bank for the signatures of both the players and here is why the duo can kick-start a brilliant campaign for the manager:
The Red Devils have one of the strongest squads in Europe but they are a bit weak in a couple of areas on the field. While Paul Pogba’s midfield partner will keep them awake this summer, Manchester United are also in search of a defender and a winger who can improve the productivity of the team at both ends of the field. Star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic might not be at the club come the end of the season while Wayne Rooney is also set to quit, leaving the club a bit short of attackers. Though the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Antoine Griezmann have been linked with a move to the club in the summer, Mourinho will also need additions to other position in attack to keep up with the challenges of the next season.
This is where Willian can step up for Jose Mourinho. Having already worked with the Portuguese at the Bridge, Willian is a top class player who will walk into the first team at the club next season and his directness and pace can help Manchester United get the better of many teams in the country. With Henrikh Mkhitaryan occupying one wing, Mourinho can use Willian on the other wing, freeing up the likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial, both of who can move into a more comfortable striker’s position next season. This might also save Manchester United from spending on a top class striker this summer.
Adding to this would be the solidity of Belgium’s Toby Alderweireld who is now among the best players in this position in the Premier League. A constant presence at the back for club and country, Alderweireld has been one of the most consistent players for Mauricio Pochettino’s side for more than a season now and at 28, is one of the most reliable and experienced players in his position in Europe. Manchester United have the likes of Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly to play in this position but having used Marcos Rojo regularly, Mourinho will want to add a top class defender to his side and Alderweireld could be the man who can help them take the next step.
Mourinho is determined to spend big on summer transfers at the end of the season but if he is able to get his hands on both the players or either of them, it will be a wonderful coup by the Red Devils who will be able to compete with the best next season.
