Signing a new striker and 2 other things Leeds United must do this summer

Three Things Leeds United Must Do This Summer

Leeds United have endured a rather tumultuous campaign this season. Although they were expected to secure a promotion ahead of this season, the Whites have faltered miserably. Despite showing initial promise under Thomas Christiansen, Leeds have only gone from bad to worse.

Now, with Paul Heckingbottom in charge, there have not been any significant improvements as such and I am predicting a busy summer for them.

With the summer transfer window coming up, it is important for the club to focus on building a strong foundation. There are several areas that require strengthening and it will be interesting to see whether or not Heckingbottom succeeds in doing so. A lot will be at stake next term and with that in mind, here are three things Leeds must do this summer.

Sign a striker

This seems like the most obvious option but unfortunately, the situation is a little more complex at Elland Road. Pierre-Michel Lasogga’s loan will come to an end this season and the club must make a decision about his future. His performances have been decent but Leeds might be eager to bring a player who can create a solid impact up front.

Lasogga has hit just 10 goals in 27 Championship outings this season and that is not exactly an encouraging number. Thus, the club could either sign him permanently and hope for the best or choose to let him go and look for a new quality striker. But regardless of who comes in or goes out, the club must be aware of the gravity of the situation.

Clean up the arsenal

Let’s be real; Leeds have some players who have flopped poorly. Instead of keeping hold of them and wasting the wages, the club could be better off by selling them to raise funds for bigger purchases in the future. Players like Mateusz Klich, Felix Wiedwald, Ouasim Bouy and Pawel Cibicki have either been terrible or have failed to make an impact.

Nevertheless, if Leeds are to harbour serious hopes of securing a playoff spot, they must get rid of excess baggage and sign players who can make a difference.

Find a suitable centre-back

Pontus Jansson has blown hot and cold this season but he has somewhat been reliable at the back. Unfortunately, one cannot say the same about his partners. With Kyle Bartley out of the picture for good, Liam Cooper and Matthew Pennington have been paired up with Jansson quite often.

However, neither of the two has been convincing enough for Leeds and that has led to several deficiencies at the back. Thus, to solidify their defence and bring out the best from Jansson, Leeds must make it a point to sign a new central defender.
