Wolves signing this world-class veteran would be a big statement of intent from Nuno Santo – agreed?

Wolves opinion: Should Nuno Santo sign Filipe Luis?

According to a report from the Birmingham Mail, Wolves are set to battle it out with French champions Paris Saint-Germain and Brazilian side Flamengo for the signing of Atletico Madrid’s Filipe Luis in the summer.

The former Premier League winner is out of contract and will be available for free this summer and Wolves could have the upper hand, thanks to their relationship with super-agent Jorge Mendes.

The Wanderers have acquired a lot of players who are the clients of Mendes, over the last two years, and if the move for Luis is serious, they can consider themselves as front-runners for his signature in the coming weeks.

However, the prospect of Champions League football with PSG and a chance to return to his home country with Flamengo could also prove to be too difficult for the Brazilian to turn down as he evaluates his offers.

Wolves have had a stunning season on their return to the Premier League and have booked a place in the qualifying stages of the Europa League next season. That is an outstanding achievement for Nuno Espirito Santo, who has done the unthinkable at the Molineux this season.

However, the qualifying rounds in the competition begin much earlier than the Premier League season and Wolves will have to cut their pre-season short to prepare themselves for the long and daunting season.

Wolves have done remarkably well with just 20 players in their squad but taking the risk to repeat the same with potential games on Thursday nights will be a humungous gamble that would backfire next season.

Burnley suffered the same this season, who because of the early start to the season, suffered massively in the Premier League.

Wolves face the huge risk of getting stuck in a relegation battle if they fail to improve the squad depth in the summer, and signing Filipe Luis for free would be a wonderful start towards rectifying that issue.

Luis is massively experienced at the top level, having played over 500 senior games for club and country. The 33-year-old is also hugely experienced in Europe, having won the competition with Atletico Madrid last season.

A player of Luis’ quality is hard to find in today’s transfer market and given the fact that he will cost nothing in terms of transfer fees, Wolves have an easy decision to make this summer.

Conclusion

Filipe Luis’ quality and experience will be hugely beneficial for Wolves in their long season in the Premier League and the Europa League next season.

The veteran’s guidance will bring out the best in the squad’s younger players and Nuno Santo shouldn’t think twice about making a move for him this summer.
