Enough is enough: It’s time for Man United to part ways with their £12.7m liability – Solskjaer must offload him

Manchester United opinion: Should Solskjaer keep Matteo Darmian?

According to a report from the Mirror, Manchester United are set to offer a new contract to Matteo Darmian in the summer. The Italian will be out of contract at the end of the season and the report reveals that the Red Devils do not want him to leave for free in the summer.

Darmian made the switch to Old Trafford from Torino back in 2015 for £12.7m and has made 91 appearances for the club so far. However, the 29-year-old has clearly been out of favour this season, having made just 5 appearances in the league all season.

The report says that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants Darmian to stay at the club, which is extremely surprising since he has had just one minute of action since the arrival of the Norwegian back in December.

Manchester United giving Matteo Darmian a new deal at the club makes very little sense and at the age of 29, it is an investment that the Red Devils should stay away from in the summer.

Diogo Dalot’s emergence this season is a massive boost to United and the Portuguese deserves the first-choice role at the club.

Ashley Young has also performed well when he has played this season and the veteran will be a good enough option for Solskjaer either from the start or as a backup for Dalot.

Luke Shaw has cemented his role as the first choice left-back and with Dalot and Young both capable of playing in that position, Manchester United should be set for next season.

Darmian, despite his experience, is prone to errors in his game and has often been caught out of position due to his lack of pace. The Italian’s lack of match practice would not help United’s cause either and offering him a new deal will only increase their already big wage bill.

The 29-year-old was quoted earlier in the season saying that he misses his home country and this caused reports about Inter Milan’s interest to emerge. Darmian could still be a good player for Inter, especially with Cedric Soares’ failure to impress after his January switch.

Conclusion

Manchester United have no reason to extend Matteo Darmian’s contract in the summer and the Red Devils should let the 29-year-old Italian leave for free.

His lack of game time this season is enough evidence that there are players at the club who are higher up in the pecking order. In the player’s context too, a new deal makes no sense.
