Man City signing this South American legend would add some much-needed experience after Kompany departure

Manchester City opinion: Should the Cityzens snap up Dani Alves?

According to a report from the Metro, Manchester City and Manchester United are set to battle for the signature of Brazilian right-back Dani Alves, who has confirmed his departure from Paris Saint-Germain.

The 36-year-old scored eight goals in 73 appearances for PSG after joining from Juventus in 2017. During his spell at the Parc des Princes, he won back-to-back Ligue 1 titles, one Coupe de France and one Coupe de la Ligue.

With his contract up and being no longer attached to a club, Dani Alves is now a free agent. And as he has glowingly spoken about the Premier League very recently, Manchester City must beat Manchester United to the signing of the veteran right-back.

Barcelona

Manchester City completed the domestic treble last season and will be eager to continue their dominance in England. Despite their rich success, Pep Guardiola’s men once again struggled in the Champions League.

A defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-finals of the competition was the only blemish in an otherwise flawless season which saw them win every other trophy on the offer.

The Cityzens are expected to go hard again next season as Guardiola will prioritise winning the Champions League. \

They’ll need some reinforcements over the summer, with Vincent Kompany departing the club after a decade-long service and David Silva slowly coming to the end of his illustrious career.

One of the areas that Guardiola must address over the summer is the right-back department. Kyle Walker is regarded as one of the best right-backs in the Premier League and has immensely improved under the tutelage of the Spanish manager.

However, he will need some strong competition next season as Danilo is likely to leave the Etihad Stadium this summer due to a lack of game time. Hence, it makes sense for City to snap up free agent Dani Alves as a back-up to Walker.

Alves is a serial winner and in all has won 24 major trophies in Europe as well as the Copa America and two Confederations Cups with Brazil in a sparkling career. Plus, the 36-year-old has worked under Guardiola at Barcelona.

Although he may no longer possess the extraordinary agility and dynamism, Alves still can offer a lot going forward as well as defensively.

His Champions League experience and winning mentality would be of great help for City, whose primary aim will be to win the coveted European competition next term.

Verdict

The ex-Barcelona and Juventus star has not played in the Premier League, and it would be interesting to see how he copes with the demands of English football. All in all, Alves on a free transfer would be a smart signing for Manchester City.
